Travel Tips for Can Tho

he didn't go for the extras

by richiecdisc

Our room the first night was a bit run down but clean. It was to be expected at the price we were paying and after a full day’s travel and a big meal, we slept deeply and saw little of it. A friend we met on the bus went for a massage and found there was a lot more on offer than a rub down. In fact, his masseuse was quite indignant when he did not go for the extras! But this could just as easily happen to anyone traveling solo.

The next day was perhaps even more interesting, with lots of boat trips to floating markets, and we got up close to the locals that make a living on the water. Photo opportunities were plentiful. The children were especially friendly and we were surprised that none asked for compensation for their utter cuteness. The trip seemed to be going all too well and we were sad it would end the next day until we arrived at our final stop. (continued below in Fondest Memory)

candy factories

by richiecdisc

I will be the first to admit that when I saw the itinerary of our Mekong Delta tour, I was not all that enthused about the places they had us visiting. I figured that the stops were basically set up to get kickbacks for the tour operators. It was a fair assumption after three weeks in Vietnam where that had happened to us on a daily basis. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only were they not pushy in getting you to buy their wares, it was genuinely interesting to see how they made their products. The candy factory was particularly fun and their stuff was so good and cheap, we couldn’t resist buying some. In fact, we were sorry we didn’t buy more of the coconut caramels that D still dreams about till this day.

Munirangsyaram Pagoda

by richiecdisc

On the way into Cantho, I noticed this very atmospheric pagoda from the bus and hoped I’d be able to find it during our short stay. It was too dark that evening but I noticed it was very close to the place we ate dinner, and that made it close enough to our hotel to make a morning visit before our bus left town. After three weeks of less than impressive Vietnamese architecture, this Khmer influenced compound seemed a thing of exquisite beauty. Early in the morning, we had the grounds to ourselves until some Khmer monks arrived and were surprised to find us already investigating their world. You can find it on Hoa Binh in Cantho.

Mekong Jungle Trip

by chrisvandenbroucke

The jungle trip was one of the most scary jungle trips I ever made.

You are aware of the history and think you are an invader. Walking with that vision, you hear everything. You almost can feel the enemy around the corner, behind every tree...
they can come out of their tunnels.

It's scary

Moreover, we walked over artificially made paths which were flooded so we didn't know where the swamp began and ended...

Rice paper factory

by galy

The delta of the Mekong is where one can find the best rice paper and rice cakes.RICE PAPER- is made from a batter of rice flour, water and salt. The paper is steamed, then dried on bamboo racks. Used as wrapper for a variety of spring rolls.
