Does anyone have information on the cable car to the island,
What cost - how to arrange a trip across and back. I do not want to play at the resort fun park.

I'm sorry I can't remember the exact price for the cable car on its own but arranging a trip is as easy as hailing a taxi or xe-om from the street. The cable car station is about 5 kms south of the city so should only be a 2-3 dollar fare.
At the ticket window you have the option of buying different level passes, Gold , Silver , Bronze etc.
The cheapest just gives you a round trip to the island and I think it cost about 5 dollars, while top of the range gives you a ride on every attraction and entry to the waterpark as well as a 5 course seafood lunch, I think it cost about 25 dollars.
When I was there last October, we opted for the second highest option which included the rides, waterpark and a lesser lunch, we had a great day but spent most of it just lazing around at the waterpark, the meal was great and served at a beutiful waterfront restaurant but as it was a hot day nobody was really very hungry and the servings were massive, we battled to eat half of it.
We went on a saturday morning about 10 am and stayed till about 4 pm, the outside attractions and waterpark were almost deserted the whole time we were there but as we left the local viet tourists were pouring in and the mainland station had long lines forming, si I suggest visiting during the day if your visiting on a weekend or local holidays.
If I go again this year I will just get the waterpark entry and order a light snack to eat at my cabana, the food is good and very reasonably priced considering you are at a theme park.

The cable car I think from memory is about $4 or $5 each way, there's no need to book you just hop on/off. Quite easy actually. You can rest at one of their restaurant and order lunch there it's right next to the pier and nice enough to just hang around or go for a walk.

Rainbow Divers, run by Brit Jeremy Stein, describe themselves as the best dive operators in Vietnam and they are! Top notch equipment for rental, divemasters who know their job, small groups for diving (4 pl. max).
40US$ pays for the boattrip, full equipment, two dives and lunch.
Receiving a gift from someone who can least afford it means so much. A young girl who sold cakes on the beach was looking very miserable so I asked her what was wrong - she had not made enough money that day to take back for her family. I feigned starvation anfd we bought most of what she had left. The next day she gave me a bracelet to thank me for helping her out. I was speechless and will treasure it forever.
The beach of Nha Trang seems like paradise if you’ve been on the road in an bus for several days: White sand, blue water, green palms and above that a blue, sunny sky. Perfect to go underwater :-) At the PADI 5 Star Dive Centre “Rainbow Divers” you’ve the possibility to see the Chinese Sea from another side. Unfortunately I haven’t had the time to dive but I talked to an instructor who seemed to be very serious and of course PADI is a name around the world (I also learned diving there) and so you should be in good hands. But I have to say that I’ve done a walk on the beach as there was low tide. And I saw a lot of garbage (which is completely gone when there’s high tide) and a cadaver of a dog who has been skinned. So probably you should have good nerves if you want to dive there :-)
A daily boat trip with min. two divers: $ 50
beach dive (with buddy): $ 25
beach dive (with divemaster): $ 30
They also offer night diving, open water course, advanced course, rescue course and others. You can rent everything there.
This no-frills place serves good seafood. Try the crab or clams with ginger lemongrass and chilli, or the fish hotpot. My favorite dish will be the fish hotpot because we like it hot and spicy! We love the gravy very much, we even mix it with our white rice.
Nha Trang is well known for its boat tours that run to the offshore islands. Mama Hahn was the person that started these tours and even though she isn't allowed to operate the tours anymore, many of us who took the tour with her will never forget her.
Mama Hahn ran the best party boats anywhere in the world as far as I'm concerned. How could you beat going to four islands for $7 US. The first island involved snorkeling. The second saw a big seafood lunch. The third was the opening of the floating bar. The fourth was basically relaxing. The price included as much "funny smoke" as you could handle. One Viet Kieu commented that we looked like a boat full of refugees when we got off.
It was always a good time and I pity the idiots that thought that they could out party Mama Hahn. The boat tours still go and are still pleasant. However, they have become increasingly family oriented. Even though Mama Hahn eventually ran into trouble with the authorities we still remember what a true party boat is like.
