1. Is it easy to get transport to Saomai Hotel from train station?
2. How far is sunday market from that hotel?

Would love to get feed back from anyone.

You should have the hotel meet the train (this is important, because many have been scammed). Normally they charge about $2. to get to Sapa from the train. You don't say which market - do you mean Bac Ha? Bac Ha is a good 3 hr drive from Sapa. You should also ask your hotel about the jeep - most hotels in Vietnam also run a travel desk.

There are 2 options for the transfer from the train station to Sao Mai hotel:

+ By local bus: It is very easy. You could find it in front of the train station

+ By shuttle bus from your hotel in Sapa: You could contact the hotel and asking them if they could arrange the transfer for you.

The sunday market is quite far from hotel your as it located in different direction. You will need a full day to visit this market.

If you would like to hire a jeep, contact with your hotel or travel agent in Sapa. They are very happy to arrange it for you.

Cheers,

Travel Tips for Lao Cai

drinking water

by yuet29

The drinking water at Sapa is slightly more expensive than in anywhere else. For 1litre drinking water, you can get at 5,000D in any city in Vietnam but not sapa. You need to pay around 8,000D for a litre of water.

Curious and friendly people

by yuet29

Sapa people are curious. Even a normal local (not to sell you something) will first smile at you, then ask you where are you from, your age and your name.

Vietnamese are very particular about age. Different to the custon in malaysia or singapore (not sure in other places) where the age of a lady is her top secret. They will ask your age and marital status even you are first met. The same experience I met the most in Sapa.

Sapa market

by yuet29

Sapa market is a crowdy and lively market.

The ground floor is the wet market; the first floor is where the minority sell their handicrafts.. their blankets, traditional clothes, hats etc.

The hill tribe people dressed in their traditional clothes and buy/ sell in the market. Very colouful and fascinating. I especially like the kids living here, they have curios eyes and red cheeks, very sweet.

"Lao Cai Train station"

Lao Cai, the city itself has not much to see. But is the stopover to Sapa - the beautiful spot with nice weather.
The tourist train often arrives at 5.30 or 6.00, some will stop for breakfast & rest here before heading to Bac Ha Market ( if it's Sunday ).
Then again, in the afternoon, bus from Sapa will drop tourist off at the train station at about 5.00, 4 hours waiting for the train. What will you do?
- Shower services are available at most of mini guesthouse, even a room for lieing down for a while.
- Dinner at restaurant & having a beer waiting for train.
- Catch a motorbike-taxi to the border of Vietnam & China ( just 1km far from the train station ). You couldnt enter China if you dont have visa, of course, but it's good to see where the Red River ( one of the main river system in Northern Delta ) starts in Vietnam.
- Or kill time & money for Gambling at Lao Cai International Casino.

* Note: If you want to bring your motorbike up there, must be on train number SP3, SP2 hasnt got big carriage for goods.

"Specialty Of Lao Cai"

Thang co - one kind of hot-pot made from horse meat, beef meat & theirs insides .
Thang co + Ruou ( Wine ) sounds perfect ........

Sapa and Mountain Regions

by AussieLuke

"Sapa"

Sapa is a village located in the Hoang Lien mountains about 300km N/W of Hanoi. An overnight train is generally the best way to get there, and many hiking treks leave from this village. You can choose to climb the highest peak in Indochine (Mt Fansipan) or take a light trek through the many valleys and farmlands. I did a four day trek which included 2 nights in a homestay which was wonderful. Many a rice wine was consumed and a good time had by all.

"Simple Life"

I Love the purity of this photo. Two children sitting peacefully outside their farmhouse reading a book. It captures the simplicity of life in remote Vietnam.

"Hill Tribes"

These particular women belong to the H'mong tribe of North Western Vietnam. There are approximately ten different types of tribes in Vietnam. Here they are trying to sell me clothes and garments that they have made. Most of the women had at least one gold tooth which is bizarre because they are extremely poor. Must be a tribal thing i guess.
