Walking around
Hoi An old town is small, it's easy to stroll around. While I said earlier I'm afraid the town is losing its character due to tourism, this can only be felt in the most visited places, otherwide it seems to be unchanged.

NICE SCENERY ALONG THE WAY
I am going to Vietnam in August for a relaxing week then a tourist week. I was wondering where a good place to stay in Hoi An would be for a relax.
Is the beach nice?
Or do the hotels in the city have nice pool areas?
We will be going to Hue and Hanoi after that, but thought Hoi An would be interesting but still near a beach so you could relax.
We would recommend the Ancient House which is a hotel between the city and the beach. Easy access to both.
Rooms are beautiful, just ask for the ones with the double entry doors.
Buffet breakfast is extensive and high quality. The staff are very helpful and polite, even come and turn down you bed and leave a small sweet parcel.
The city is a great place to enjoy the vietnamese way of life.
We highly recommend a trip to My Son which is a short way out of town, best accessed by a bus tour which you can organise from town (which is a LOT cheaper than what is offered from the hotels)
I'd stay at the beach. Victoria Hoi An and Golden Sands have both the beach and nice pool areas. Both also have free shuttles into town (10 minute ride).
We stayed at the Palm Garden Hotel, which was lovely had a nice pool area and right on the beach, frequent shuttles into Hoi An and would highly recommend.
Thanks for your replies. Appreciate the feedback.
hoi an beach resort has both

One of indispensable elements of Hoi An decor are its lanterns. They come in different shapes and colours, they may be round or hexagonal, star or diamond-shaped. The ones with bamboo frames covered with silk seem to be the most typical. They hang from the ceilings, windows and porches adding even more colour to the colour abundant town.
But on the 14th day of each lunar month these lanters are much more than just a decorative element. On these special nights the electricity is switched off and the streets are lit up only by those traditional Vietnamese lanterns. What a sight it must be!
Hoi An is the place to let locval tailors make what you want.
They take the size, you choose the pattern and you can come come back the next day.
A silk shirt costs 5 US$ (without pattern), or 7 with.
Cotton shirts costs 5 US$
Hoi An has a beach 4 kilometers out of town.
Last time i was there the weather was quite bad and you could not swim and most beach bars were closed, but when the weather is nice then it´s quite a lively place and the beach is relatively good there.
To get the 4 kilometers there i recommend renting a bicycle in Hoi An.
Cycling there is easy and real nice on small country roads with people working in the rice fields.
Alternatively you can take a bus or go by taxi.
One of the favorite parts of my trip was the day that me and my girlfriend rented bikes for the day and went from Hoi An to the beach. Its only a 5 kilometer ride. It was much cooler than walking around and allowed us to get out of town for a few hours.
