 | | | | Hai Au Hotel: sometimes it pays to look | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
There are quite a few options now regarding the backpacker bus that runs from Hanoi to Saigon. It’s no longer the Sinh Café’s sole domain and that is good. Competition keeps prices down, right? Well, this is true in general and sometimes it can be too good. One thing you will notice when taking the buses is they stop at a few hotels on the way into the city you’re traveling to. This is a way of getting kickbacks and making a few extra bucks that they are losing in the ever competitive market of shuttling us around their country. They generally bring you to the most expensive place first and I hadn't even given them a look, assuming they were too expensive, but in Hoi An, I decided to at least take a peek at how the other half lives. Once in the lobby of Hai Au, I noticed how nice it was and immediately told the receptionist that though it looked great, it was out of our price range. She asked us to have a look at a room and it was equally impressive but I stuck to my guns about it being too expensive. She asked how much we wanted to pay and, to be nice, I said $10 even though $8 was more like it. Surprisingly, she said we could have it for just that. So, what could I do but say thanks? The strange thing was nobody else stepped off the bus with us. It waited to whisk us off to another presumably cheaper place. She figured something was better than nothing though I am sure the price would have been more like $25 if it had been more in demand. Sometime it pays to look!
The room was by far the nicest we had on our whole trip to Vietnam. It was tastefully decorated with new wooden furniture and a small cozy balcony. The private bath was sumptuous and modern, but the best part was a chartreuse mosquito net that hung delicately over our king-size bed. The front desk staff was very helpful but not overly obtrusive and the location was quiet and not too far a walk from the Old Town. The biggest surprise was they didn’t even charge the room tax that is nearly impossible to get around paying no matter what they normally promise on checking in. It was a flat $10 a night. It’s no wonder we stayed four nights. | | | | Hoa My Hotel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I arrived late in HoiAn. I was tired and didn't know the place, so I decided to stay in the first hotel I saw in the modern part of town, where the bus drops you. This hotel turned up to be one of the best in my trip for the cost of the room, 5 USD. It is brand new, has mini bar, air condition, toilet ensuite with bathtub, TV... Cons: is rather far from the town historic center (10 minutes walking), the shops, the restaurants... Is pretty unpersonal, concrete building, but is comfortable. | | | | Vinh Hung 3: great, comfortable stay | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I had my hotel in Hanoi book something they thought was good for me, since I didn't want to arrive without a hotel, and they booked the Vinh Hung 1. When I arrived, there was something wrong with my room, a bathroom leak or something, and they asked if I wouldn't mind staying at the Vinh Hung 3, for the same price. I took this as a sign that I could bargain. And, bargain I did, for a savings, I think, of $5/night. Anyway, I think I prefered the 3. You could enter the main Vinh Hung into the back door, and hit the huge buffet breakfast, and the area where they had internet access, and 3 was much, much quiter. Plus, I had a back room, overlooking a beautiful rice paddy.
Rooftop pool. Perfect for cooling off or just chilling after a day roaming around. Cable tv. Great western style bathrooms. Little balcony overlooking the rice paddy. The buffet breakfast is great and filling. | | | | Glory Hotel: 4* Hotel on the Outskirt of Hoi An Ancient Town | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Glory Hotel is built with special style of the town's ancient houses, giving impression of a village care of the individual senses and feelings has been taken to provide to eash guest a warm and restful environment. The 4* hotel has 65 rooms pool, garden and Green field views. The Hotel reflect a perfect blend of Eastern culture and French architecture, while all rooms are immaculately designed in the combination of Vietnamese styles. However, the facilities are not well-maintained and the toilet which we stayed on the first night leaked. Thankfully, we managed to have a room change. Breakfast choices were limited. Moreover, during our 2-day stay in Hoi An, we experienced four electrical shutdowns. Still, the hotel is comfortable.
The hotel provides free internet access and also free rental of bicycles for guests who wish to cycle to the old town.
