 | Ha Long Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 35 | | This is my first time sleeping in a boat. Have always wanted to do this. Surprisingly, the cabins here are quite spacious (well, more spacious than I expected) and but there was no heater. Now, being in a boat in the cold season (remember, I am from a warmer place - so cold and me, don't really go well together !!) with NO thick blankets was a little uncomfortable initially. However, after about 15 minutes, I got warm ... looks like the cabin was not as cold as expected !! An experience :-)) Leave a Comment

ODC put us up at a hotel in Catba Island. Though it was a 3* star hotel, I found the service warm and almost enthusiastic. Food at the local restaurant was great as was the massage and sauna I had on the 7th Floor! The cost of the stay and the food was included in the package.
Go for the massage if you've endured 20km of trekking and mountain climbing . Your muscles will thank you. Where: 7th Floor Cost : USD 7 Leave a Comment Theme: HotelAddress: Nui Ngoc road, Cat Ba Town

On our first night in Ha long, we stayed onboard a junk moored off a little cove. It was great to be on the boat, food was plentiful, the dining area was nice and all of us had a neat cabin.
While everybody played pool and retreated indoors, hubby and I stood outside and tried fishing. We only had a nibble or two but it was a great experience. The staff were more than willing to give us bait.. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

This was our room onboard the Bai Tho Junk. We booked a three day trip to the bay for around $99 each. That's $33/day! This included food, accomodations, kayaking and a tour guide. This is THE way to spend time in the bay!
The groups are kept small. 9 of us had the entire fully-staffed junk to ourselves. The rooms were clean and the food was bountiful and delicious. The website is a bit difficult to navigate through. I recommend emailing them for information. handspan@hn.vnn.vn We dealt with Annie. She was very prompt with her emails. annie@handspan.com Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageDirections: In the old quarter of Hanoi, we met at the Handspan office where we boarded our minibus for the ride to the bay.Website: http://www.handspan.com

This is where we stayed on the second night of our three-day Ha Long Bay adventure. The rustic cabins were equipped with a fan, electricity, a mosquito net and a padded sleeping mat with clean sheets. The grounds were fully staffed and the meals (I should say feasts) were huge and tasty, although the dish that tasted like chicken didn’t LOOK like chicken. I will forever believe that it was indeed chicken! We paid $99 per person for a three-day trip that included transportation to-from Hanoi, all meals, a tour guide, one night on the Bai Tho Junk (boat) and one night here at this campground with a day of sea kayaking. It was well worth it! Their website isn't very user-friendly, but they are very good at replying to email. We had a full day and overnight out at the Bay and Bai Tho Cruises provided our group with two medium sized boats exclusively for our own use. The first boat was used for touring, while the second boat joined us towards the evening to provide more accomdation. The first boat had 6-7 cabins (see pics), and a smaller sized dining area while the second boat had only 5 cabins, with a larger sized dining area that was warm and cosy. The cabins had 2 single beds, the bedlinen were very clean and attached bathroom came with hot water, towels and even toothbrushes and mini-sized toothpaste. Both boats had large sun-decks on the upper deck, and the dining area doubled up as a karaoke room, shopping area and mini-casino (although we did have to bring our own deck of cards and cash He He He)
There's nothing quite like sleeping out on a boat at night. Sigh! When night falls and the boat has anchored enjoy the stillness and cool calm of the night. Be comforted by the presence of other boats moored nearby, see their lights twinkling and dancing upon the water. In the distance the rocky islands appear to change shape under the moonlight. For those who are prone to sea-sickness, please be assured. Our group had a few people that were prone to sea-sickness, but none of them felt sea-sick at all. The boat is anchored at night and the bay is completely calm and the rocking, if any, is very gentle and lulls you off to a sound and deep sleep. Comfortable and spacious room with a pleasing modern decor. Large bathroom with separate shower stall and also a bathtub. Impressive lobby with a small shop for gifts, clothing and souveniers. Reception staff were conversant in English and service was adequate. Outdoor swimming pool and outdoor jacuzzi-no didn't try it, as it was winter time! View of Halong Bay from my window and from the front of the hotel.
High speed internet connection - free in all guestrooms. Wireless internet available at the business centre but I didn't try it out. 3 phones provided - 2 in the room and 1 more in the bathroom Enjoyed the buffet breakfast-good variety and everything was tasty. Service staff at the restaurant spoke some limited English. Bathrobes and bedroom slippers provided. Welcome fruits-a mango and some small local mandarin oranges, very tasty indeed. The hotel lobby and our rooms were shiny & new. Shopping Tip: Right next door was a souvenior shop - our group bought tons of stuff there. It opens at 7 am and closes at midnight. Book a tour through Handspan Tours and you get to stay overnight on this amazing Chinese Junk. It has some 20 cabins on 3 decks (all en suite), a restaurant/bar and a top deck sun deck. It is extremely comfy, the bar remains open till you decide you have had enough (although don't stay up too late as you need to see that sunrise), the food on board terrific. There's also an open area at the back for diving.
Price is part of the package. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherComparison: more expensive than average

It is a very nice and unique experience staying on a junk boat during 2-3 days trip at Halong Bay. The rooms are basic and the walls are made of lacquered wooden planks. There is a bed, aircondition and simple toilet attached to each room. Blankets and pillows are available, and you may need extra blankets during the colder months because there is no heater in the room. The water at Halong Bay is very calm so the boat is very stable and you will not feel at sea during your sleep. The accomdation is included in the entire package of your Halong Bay overnight trips, which can range from 2-4 nights. One of the good tour operator recommended by several VT members which I have tried and found to be good is ODC travels (see website below). Leave a Comment
