Saigon Morin Hotel

I haven't really stayed at this hotel, just passed by and decided to enter and have an ice tea in the bar.
It seemed to me a mediun-high standard charming hotel, and it was really well located.

Charming

We had a lovely stay at the Saigon Morin. From when we booked over the internet (and were instantly upgraded to a deluxe room), until we were helped with our luggage to our waiting car for our transfer to Hoi An, everything was wonderful. The staff were friendly and effecient. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The tour desk was very helpful in organising what we wanted with no fuss and little notice.

The hotel has an interesting history. It was originally built in 1901 and was the first of its kind in Central Vietnam. It was a shelter for the French army and civilians during the resistance movement in 1946. By 1957, it had been confiscated by the South Vietnam Government and was used as the Hue University, and it was in the midst of the battle for Hue city during the Tet offensive in 1968. It underwent extensive renovation and was re-opened in 1997.

I liked the bathroom which had the option of opening up onto the main area. I LOVED the outdoor dining area where we sat and had our breakfasts (included in the tarriff)...there is just something about dining outdoors isn't there? Makes everthing tastier.

The one small problem was the swimming pool. It was quite a slippery area, and I was constantly in a panic that our little boy would slip and crack his head open...never fun but even less so on holiday!

Best hotel in Vietnam

Hue’s Saigon Morgan has to be the best place I’d stayed in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Taiwan or China. The Saigon Morgan has all the things you would expect from a 4 star hotel, but the thing that really struck me was the high level of customer service. Generally I’ve found that hotels in Asia, excluding Japan, have many employees who grumble at the mere thought of having to assist customers. The Saigon Morgan’s staff was incredible. Its also centrally located.

Unique Quality: First-rate customer service!!!

One of the best hotels in Vietnam

This place was perfect. The construction is turn of the century french colonial. Its location is right on the Perfume River. At night you can sit in the hotel bar on the top level and watch the lights on the bridge change color. In the center of the hotel is an open air courtyard which has a bar, a stage, and a buffet. The buffet has some of the best food that we had the entire time we were in Vietnam. Even if you are not staying at the hotel a trip to the Buffet should be made. All of the Vietnamese dishes that I love were there: Bun Bo Hue, Ban Cuon, Ban Beo, Ban Xeo, Pho, an assortment of seafood, fresh fruit, and if you want there is American/European food.
During the buffet the have entertainment. When we were there it was a band playing traditional music while attractive women did traditional dances.

Unique Quality: The food, the service, and the hotel itself

Hotel Saigon Morin = Best Location

3 days in Hue at Hotel Saigon Morin was great. I don't mind traffic noise so the room right on the road next to the river was fine. It's very handy for a night time walk down to the restaurants on the water. We did day tours from here and walked around at night. Morin has a pool which is OK but not on the scale of luxury like Victoria Resort or Nikko Hanoi.

Unique Quality: The best thing about Morin is the great history associated with the hotel. They have photos on the hall walls going back to 1901 and through the both wars. The rooms are so beautiful that I would stay there just for that alone. They have the most beautiful, elegant rooms of any hotel we stayed at. Each room has a little balcony for people and traffic watching and Hue is one of the more beautiful towns with heaps of lovely parks and pagodas. Morin has some assocated tailor shops but wait til you get to Hoi An. Use Hue as an idea gathering stop for clothes. Get pictures of what you want to take to tailors in Hoi An. Wile we visited, the embroiderers Guild has a demonstration set up in the foyer. The beds are hard like every other hotel, unfortunately. Don't eat in Morin Hotel, overpriced and scanty food. We were very disappointed. We ate down on the floating restaurants instead, diagonally across the road. Much better deal there.

A great hotel.

Fanstastic, located right on a main road, so you hear all the street activity below. Very luxurious, popular with French tourists. Beautiful gardens and the night life was good.

Unique Quality: Pool, sauna and massage, billiards, traditional shows, Perfume River nearby where you can take a little cruise.

DO NOT STAY HERE - What a Shame

Just got back - May07 - and this hotel was the lowlight in our trip. Great building etc - too bad about the staff. 3 out of 9 of us had things STOLEN in this hotel. I would advise staying somewhere else unless you're willing to see things disappear from your room.

Disappointing

This was a very disappointing hotel to stay at. The reception staff were very slow to check us in. when we arrived at our room it was very spacious but seemed rather dark. The bathroom was fine but hot water seemed in short supply at the peak times of the day.
We visited the One-Dollar Coffee Shop on the ground floor. We ordered two coffee and some banana cake. The cake was days old. It was so dry as to be inedible.
Breakfast was outside in the courtyard and very pleasant. A buffet style affair with plenty of choice. Unfortunately I do not come alive without coffee in a morning so was upset to have to ask 3 times for it! I was already grouchy because our room was on the front of the building and the traffic noise really disturbed my sleep.
There must be better value else where in Hue

Booking train from Hue to Danang

by Pam1951

Can I book train ahead of arrival in Hue? If so, how? If not, will there likely be vacancy on train or are they generally booked?

We will be staying at Saigon Morin and I am nervous about not being able to get tickets once I get there. Thank you

Any tips on Hue would be much appreciated - good restaurants, not miss sights

RE: Booking train from Hue to Danang

by Pam1951

Thank you for your response. We do want a "comfortable" car - but don't need a sleeper. Which travel agency do you suggest I contact about getting train ticket ahead of time. We want to leave Hue for Danang on November 20. My son tried to buy tickets for us in Saigon but the agent he went to said we had to wait until we got to Hue. Help please !

Thanks so much. Which restaurants and tour operators would you recommend?
