i stayed in City Walk Hotel for my 3 nights 4 days trip in Canberra. Fantastic backpackers stay. And what makes it best is that the bus interchange is just in front of the hotel. i love it. However, on friday and saturday night people go to pub till early in the morning. so for those light sleepers, u might want to consider asking for the room at the fifth floor!!! The dormitory i slept in is a 6 bed per room which cost me about AUD$22 per night.
one common area and one kitchen. Basically the kitchen provides you with all the neccessary utensils, fridges, pots, frying pans, knives...everything is there... There is also a laundry area for you to wash and dry your clothes!!! So no worries. All the basic things that you need is there!!! | | | | Canberra Backpackers: Central Budget Option | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed here two separate weeks in June 2005. It's well placed in the downtown, 'Civic' area of Canberra, which does on the other hand mean it's pretty quiet at night. Rooms consist of several bunkbeds with some rentable lockers. Longer term lockers are also available on the first floor for you to leave your stuff so you don't have to drag it around before you catch your bus back to Sydney. You can rent an entire room on your own if you like, I ended up with a 4 bedded room on both occasions. It's a bog standard urban hostel, which is pretty much what I was looking for and one of the cheapest options in Canberra. I wasn't really disattisfied with this place but I couldn't rave about it either. You can be as anonymous as you like, and I like that in a hostel. While I was there, my window leaked during a rain storm all over my rucksack, I discovered that the night porter was ALWAYS that rude and that hostel kitchens are vile and unhygenic.
The place has a bottle shop, a small swimming pool and an equally small gym with, oddly, a ping pong table. In summer the roof top bbq area looks like it could offer a cool place to sit out of an evening. There's also a bar in the basement which is ok to unwind in, a cafe/restaurant which also has some computer terminals from which to access the internet. TIP1: Go round the corner to a different internet cafe which is about half the price. Just ask at the reception and they'll happily give you directions. TIP2: The photos on their website are sort of representative. Sort of... That is, in reality the place is looking quite a bit more tired than on their website, but still no dump. | | | | City Walk Hotel: As you know from above, I... | Tip Rating: | | | | |
As you know from above, I stayed at my friend's place but will give you here two hotels that (in my opinion) are the best in Canberra just in terms of location that's in the heart of the city. They are also good if you are on a low budget travel. The first one is the City Walk Hotel. Closer to the city centre I cant find a thing. This hotel is located above a shopping complex that includes a newsagent, café, clubs, restaurant, medical centre and also for the ladies a hair salon, fashion clothing and shops. When you step out you are already on the bus interchange. You are also a few steps away from the Jolimont Interstate Bus Terminal, taxi rank, cinema, casino and don't forget the pubs. Maybe on the outside not good on the eye, but if you check their web page you will see it's a neat place. Theme: HotelDirections: City Walk Hotel 2 Mort Street Canberra City ACT 260

 | | | | Country Comfort Greenway (46 Rowland Rees Crescent Greenway ACT 2900.): One of the few choices in Tuggeranong | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Should you find yourself needing accommodation in the southern Canberra satellite township of Tuggeranong, about 20km south of the city, the choices are few. A friend’s wedding recently required us to overnight there, so we stayed at the Country Comfort Greenway. In style, the motel is best described as “modern corporate”, with 100 rooms (all non-smoking) spread over a rambling two storey complex, also a restaurant, sauna, swimming pool, wireless internet, etc. All we needed was a comfortable room! If you are staying as a tourist, try for a room looking toward the river and hills. Our room was at ground level, near the carpark and set up for disabled occupants. The significance of that was that the shower had no screen, just a half curtain to separate it from the toilet – plus disabled persons fittings. But water from the shower went everywhere! In one of those curious things, Pauline found that the cord on the hairdryer was too short to allow the dryer to be used in front of the mirror. Aside from those little quibbles, and the counter staff not asking if we wanted breakfast next day (we didn’t, but you do need to advise the previous evening), our stay was quite comfortable if somewhat “corporate”. You will find this motel in Rowland Rees Crescent, Greenway, tucked away behind the Tuggeranong Vikings Bowling Club and the offices of the Department of Social Security. That doesn’t sound very impressive, but the club is not noisy and as the motel overlooks the parkland along the Murrumbidgee River with uninterrupted views across to the Brindabella Range, the setting would be hard to beat. What’s more, the Tuggeranong Town Centre is only a five minute walk away.
