Hotel in Canberra
by wise23girl
We want to spend 2 nights in Canberra in August . We would like something nice,a bit of atmosphere near to shops/boutiques/coffee shops in or close to city centre on the Narrabundah side of town(we go to a party there)if this scenario exists.
I have looked at Canberra but cannot quite pick the best spot.
Thanks.

Hi there
I have been to canberra many times. I recommend the victor lodge
victorlodge.com.au
free breakfast

its not far from Narrabundah
I don't know how your travel but if you have a car its a short drive to Narrabundah

IMO, the only "nice" hotel on the south side of Canberra with atmosphere is the Hyatt Canberra, but it isn't convenient to shops and cafes, it's sort of half way between the shops/boutiques/coffee shops (Kingaton and Manuka) and the city center. The York is another Kingston hotel (like the Victor) - it's small and the rooms are modern, right across the street from shops and cafes.

I guessed the Hyatt might be the one but it is a bit pricey for this trip and my daughter really wants to be close to things for our one day. We have a 50 party Friday night.
I will have Barney with me...see Misc post about Barney and my album I am just starting. I have not advertised for Canberra yet but I have for Buderim in the Meets.

The Novotel is at the best location for just everything in the city centre.

I agree... The Novotel is a very good location, very clean rooms with your own bathroom. :)
Travel Tips for Canberra
ACT Brumby
by ATXtraveler
The mascot of the ACT team is the Brumby, which is a feral horse that roams across the whole of Australia. There seem to be two conflicting reports on where the name originated from, one being from the Aboriginal name for wild "barooomby", and the other for Sergeant James Brumby, who led all his horses run free after he moved to Tasmania from New South Wales.
However the name came into place, ACT has had its share of famous Brumbies. It is the name of their rugby club, but the territory is also very close to Snowy River, where the famous Australian movie "The Man from Snowy River" was filmed.
All in all, whether you see a Brumby mascot or a couple wild horses, now you know the story of the Brumby.

Visit the Parliament Building 'close up'. It is built into an earthen berm and is both architecturally and ecologically innovative. It was first opened in 1988 and was designed by Mitchell/Giurgola and Thorp architects after a competition with over 325 entries. Being able to wander through the corridors of this beautiful building. For more information see: http://www.aph.gov.au/jhd/visiting/architect/build.htm

Well, the floriade was definitely smthg I still remember 7 years later. Never have i seen such a spectacle of flowers. There was an indian restaurant we went to at the city centre, near the roundabout (haha, that's a joke, Canberrra has one too many roundabouts!)
Cant remember the name of restaurant but the food was superb!
Did I hear a ghost?
by iandsmith
Probably not, but you can rest (or not) assured that if there are ghosts in Canberra then Old Parliament House would be top of the list of probability.
There are certainly enough photos, paintings and memorabilia to give you an idea what they may look like.
This chamber was a more personalized area than the new one sitting beneath the grassy knoll on the hill behind. King George V even made the trip out from jolly old England to open the building, since we are still subservient to the Mother Country in matters of state.
In this building the real seats of power were in the Prime Minister's Office, the Cabinet Room and the Party Rooms, where much of the wheeling and dealing took place. Anyone who watched the series "Yes Minister" would have a profound insight into what goes on behind closed doors in government.
The green coloured seating denotes the House of Representatives and the red the Senate. I was reminded of the War Rooms in London while visiting here. Just as happened there, the premises were vacated and left just as they were when in use, giving generations hence the opportunity to view and get the feel of how things might have been.
The building also houses the National Portrait Gallery in what used to be the Parliamentary Library. All the fittings in here are authentic reproductions of the 1927 furnishings.
An interesting detail is that at the front entrance is where Walter Burley Griffin had the main land axis for the entire design and layout of Canberra. This is where it all stems from.
It's open from 9-5 daily and the web site for more details is www.oph.gov.au

Take a walk in the Commonwealth Park that offers you more then you think. Lots of outdoor activities are organized there like the Floriade (see further), concerts and also the celebrating of New Year Eve. See or sail the Lake Burley Griffin. You will find there also the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet that is situated in Lake Burley Griffin, which was created in 1964 when the former Molonglo River was dammed. Most of the time this park, which is only minutes away from the city, is a good place for a picnic or take a rug and lay down with a good book under the many trees around. On the picture here you have a good view out the Commonwealth Park over the lake Burley Griffin within the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet and in the background the Black Mountain and the Telstra Tower (see further).
