Darwin to Ayers rock airport-advice on things to see places to stay and cheapest car hire.
by Tyronem
Hi,
We are planning a one of trip to Darwin and have booked a 3 day tour of Kakdu but would like to Hire a car and travel from Darwin to Ayers rock airport.
We will be leaving Darwin on the 31st august and fly from Ayers rock on the 5th September total of 5 days travel time ? would this be enough time and what is the best and cheapest car hire company's you could recommend, trying to find one with unlimited kilometers seems near impossible any good one in Darwin (PLEASE HELP!!) Any advice on cheap places to stay along the way and good places to see would be greatly appreciated.

I think booking a tour of Kakadu is a great way to see this area.
Have you been to Uluru ( Ayers Rock ) before? I ask this because it's a long drive and you would be missing out on one of the wonderful places to see in Australia. I would either fly into Alice Springs and get a tour across to Uluru, or just fly straight into Uluru. They have 3 night tours from Alice to Uluru, via Kings Canyon. Also this way you may be able to spend at least one day in Darwin and check out the things you can see here.

The 3 day kakadu trip is excellent idea and even better if it extended down to katherine gorge. The drive from Darwin to Alice Springs is lengthy and based on other attractions in the territory, car hire and time constraints the following is suggested, assuming you have not been in the Territory before. As anne mentioned I would fly into alice (on 31 August), hire car and look around alice. Linking up with a tour to uluru etc, would be good idea but easy to do your own driving too. The next day I would do a full day trip out from Alice along the West McDonell ranges to Glen Helen gorge and back.Along this road is where the gorges(Ormiston Gorge the best),gaps and chasms etc are located. All sealed roads and tourist friendly access, with short comfortable walks in.It is a full day out and back to Alice. You could do the East Mcdonnell Ranges the following day.You could then head out to Uluru, a comfortable 450 klm drive from Alice and spend a few days there. If you are fixed on the drive from Darwin to Uluru,(which I have done several times) then it is enough time but not a lot of options in between. Katherine Gorge(need boat tour to see and appreciate),and devils marbles main attractions. You can get from Darwin to Alice in three comfortable days and be in Uluru by lunchtime on the 4th day but won't have seen a whole lot.
best wishes for a great trip.

I am taking an 8 day Top End Spectactular Coach tour start of August, Darwin, Litchfield National Park, Magnetic Termite Mounds, Wangi Falls Katherine Gorge, Eva Valley, Edith Falls, Kakadu National Park, Yellow Water Cruise, Arnhem Land, Aboriginal Rock Art, Territory Wildlife Park, also Aboriginal guides, bushtucker etc.
I have been to alice Springs but not Urulu, however I feel you will gain a better appreciation of Northern australia by taking a tour from Darwin, there are tours to suit all budgets, from backpackers to luxury.

Darwin General Cemetery - for geneology buffs
by skatzcatz
The Darwin General Cemetery situated on McMillans Road Moil is a denominational cemetery and was opened in 1954 and closed in 1988.
It was reopened again in 1989 and subsequently closed in September 2003.
Many Cyclone Tracey victims are buried there as well as past Council alderman and dignatories.

Cullen Bay
by skatzcatz
Cullen Bay is a suburb of Darwin with a Marina, nice walking beach and various restaurants and cafes. Either a 20 minute walk from the centre of town or catch the no. 4 bus. Facilities include: scuba diving, restaurants, dragon boat racing, cafes, Mandorah Ferry etc
It can be hot!
by Travel2write
Northern Territory enjoys long hot summers and generally mild winters. The things to keep in mind when packing are: * the north (south to at least Katherine) is subject to heavy rains during the summer months.
* in summer sunny days have a very high UV factor and are capable of seriously burning the skin.
* summer is characterised by very high humidity in the north.
* inland Northern Territory (particularly around Alice Springs and Uluru) experiences continentality - ie. very hot, dry days and nights when the temperature can drop below zero.
People dress, informally, though Œsmart casual¹ wear is often required after dark at theatres and the more sophisticated hotels and restaurants. Beach wear is acceptable only on the beach and in pubs and fast food outlets; casual clothing is customary in most places.
For summer months (October to April) pack lightweight garments and a hat. In winter, usually a lightweight overcoat and woollen garments are required. Remember warmer clothes are required in the centre.
Caryota Clock Tower - Coconut Grove
by Zanzibargirl
I am trying to find out if there is a reason as to why they put a clock tower there. So far no luck. But it always seemed to me a strange piece of architecture. So just took a photo one day. It is a directional point when directing people if anything.
Dive Site - The Pinnacle (Platter Rock)
by skatzcatz
This site carries the local name "The Pinnacle" because of the picture on the echo sounder when travelling across it. It is actually a long ridge of rock rising to just a few metres below the surface in several places. Great coral and fish life here.
Depth from 4 metres to 15 metres.
20/12/2004 visibility 3 metres
