Darwin to Broome - easy now?

by WojtekD

Hi Globies
I have a question to our Australian experts:
Wild Kununurra (Darwin to Broome route) seems to be interesting...
Years ago it was hard accessible, expensive and difficult to explore. Car rental companies refused to rent a compact car for Darwin - Broome route.
How does it looks now?. Are main roads improoved?
Stopover suggestions? Special attractions worth to stop?
Thanks...
Wojtek

There are main two routes from Darwin to Broome. The Gibb River Road (more northerly) you'd need a 4WD after you get past Kununurra to the turn off.

The main highway through Hall's Creek and Fitzroy Crossing is all good bitumen road. The only reason any company wouldn't want to hire for that trip is the return issue. With the bigger companies this shouldn't be a problem.

If you're talking about a time when the road through there was bad you're talking about 30 years ago. The main highway has been good for a long time, but as I said, the Gibb River Road is only for 4WD.

What's worth (or possible) seeing depends on which time of year you intend going.

Excellent sealed road from Broome to Darwin via Katherine. Was in the NT August this year, travelled to Katherine, Litchfield Park, Kakadu. Sealed roads all the way except for side tracks. Best time to travel end May to September, dry weather and low humidity, miss the rainy season.

Good Luck,
Mike

Hi there,

In OZ summer (wet season) the Gibb River oad often becomes impassable and I recommend not doing it unless yo uhave lots of experience and there are atleast 2 vehicles in your group, during the winter if you have a 4WD then it is a pretty special drive, the sealed road is passable all year round but still better in the winter then in the summer

Enjoy your trip

We did a 4-wheel drive coach tour which included this section. We stayed at Home valley Station which is owned by the indigenous people. Not a lot to see there but it was a pleasant overnight stay and less expensive than El questro. I suggest you get to see the Bungle Bungles if at all possible, they are unique. You do need to have a four-wheel drive or go on an organised tour. If money is not too much of a consideration, take a flight from Kununurra, or a helicopter flight from within the park. Geike Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana gorge are all well worth a visit if you are interested in spectacular scenery. You would need to get onto a boat trip for Geike, but the other two can be done by walking unguided. Wear old shoes for Tunnel Creek as you do walk through water.

Travel Tips for Darwin

Government House

by kooka3

The Government house is a beautiful building, and it's one of the few things that survived both Cyclone Tracy and the Japanese bombing of the city.

You can't go it, but it's worth a walk by. It's on the Esplanade by the harbour.

Located 35 kms south of Darwin, the turnoff is signposted off the Stuart Highway. The gates are open from 8 -8pm daily. Its a lovely safe place (no crocs) to swim and cool off, you can join the HUGE Barramundi that are here. There is plenty of greenery for a shady picnic area, and you may see some Magpie geese and Ducks. There is also a couple of short walks that can be done. A nice spot on a hot day.

Tolmer Falls - Litchfield National Park

by Mikebb

Our stop at Tolmer Falls was short and limited to several minutes on the viewing platform to take a few photographs.

It looked a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole far below . The path down to the waterfall is reasonably easy to walk.
