nothing if not unique!

The obvious feature of this hotel is that it is shaped like a crocodile! When you are actually in the hotel that isn't apparent, unless you look at the fire escape route maps on the wall. The accommodation and hotel facilities are of an average standard, they have a large dining room which has an 'eat as much as you like' buffet as well as an A La Carte menu. This hotel was qiute pleasant, but don't bother to stay here just because it's crocodile shaped; unless you want to tell people you have! It's location in the centre of Kakadu national park is a bonus.

The Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn is promoted as "a cool retreat in the midst of wilderness." Anne and I stayed here and we were thrilled with the facilities and rooms but found the AU$150.00 a little overpriced for the style and size of room. Having said that, this was a truely fantastic experience that I can recommend.
This uniquely shaped hotel has the stairwells concealed within the legs of the crocodile, the rooms form the outside of the torso and the tail , reception and restaurants are within the head and the pool area is on the interior of the body!

We took a 2 day APT tour to Kakadu National Park - a World Heritage Area - from Darwin and spent the one night at the Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn. We saw aboriginal paintings, and learned about aboriginal culture. We were amazed at the amount of bird life on the Yellow water cruise despite it being at the end of the dry season. We highly recommend an early morning 1/2 hr. flight out of Jabiru in a small plane as it gives you a much better idea of the area. The cost was $75.00 US - $100 Cdn .

Driving to Jabiru

On the road that from Darwin leads to Jabiru, in the heart of the Kakadu Park: 290 of straight road and only tre gas stations: 100 km between each other, and in between nothing, only eucalyptus and birds. During the whole journey, I've seen probably 10 cars, not more.
Jabiru

On 24 April 2006 Cyclone Monica side-swiped Jabiru. Damage to infrastructure was minimal but a lot of trees came down. It still looks a bit of a mess in lots of places but cleaning up is progressing.
One loss for visitors is the shady area by the lake where people would picnic. Most of those trees are gone and it looks a bit like a construction site.
One plus is that with many trees missing the Crocodile Hotel is now more visible in it's shape as a crocodile. Maybe you should get a look before trees grow back and block the view again.
The photo above is pre-cyclone.
