Travel Tips for Katherine
Canoe down the Katherine River
We did this for three days with a group of nine of us (including our guide)
It was an experience - an interesting one to say the least.
None of my family are real roughing it camping people - so looking back
on it now it was quite amusing. We had the best tour guide called Snowey,
he was a great guy who told us great stories and looked after us for the entire
journey. You get to see some amazing things - such as crocodiles rising up beside
your canoe, you get to go down small rapids and really experience the true
camping experience ie. pitching tents, no toilets, cooking a meal, waking up with
crocodile footprints around your tents, now showers and lots and lots of physical
Lets just say i was happy to get back to a hotel and a hot shower. But it was a great
Railway Station Museum
Nice for a quick tour and to learn about the history of the rail in the area and how Katherine developed around the railway line.
The museum also has displays on wartime activities involving the railway and locals.
Gardens of the cycad
In the subrban area of Katherine there is an interesting display for those who are oriented towards gardens.
It's the Cycad Gardens and it takes you to a world of plants you may not be familiar with. The walkway leads you past many weird and wonderful shapes and types of foliage that you may not have seen before and may never see again.
Though they aren't huge gardens they certainly are interesting and there's also a cafe where you can ponder what you've just seen and buy some souvenirs.
KATHERINE (Outback Australia)
When you say "Katherine, Australia" everybody immediately thinks of Katherine Gorge, and I guess, everybody that comes here, does the cruise. I am not doing a review on it, will only say that we enjoyed it.
Katherine is quite a large town with a population of about 10,000 people. Its located on the Stuart highway, 330kms from Darwin. Katherine has experienced a few floods in its time. There are lots of nice places to visit here and surrounding Katherine, its a good idea to make it your base for a while.
Travellers rest in a harsh landscape .
I was in katherine for a few days relaxing after some long drives around oz the natural hot springs here are fantastic its hard to pull yourself out ,i decided to check out katherine gorge .Upon arrival i found it to be well set up for tourism with organised hire boats and canoes and tours aswell as a kiosk , there's also a variety of hikes you can do and there not for the faint hearted in fact while i was there someone had a heart attack , i did a bout a 15km hike over fairly rough terrain that was often steep and rocky in parts ,at the end of which i was rewarded with a great spot to swim and sunbathe .
Ill include Edith falls in this as its actually at the other end of the Katherine gorge and if your really keen you can hike to and from each point . There is some really beautiful scenery here ,you can swim basically anywhere along these estuaries and water holes and in the hot outback sun its heaven .
