Katherine River Lodge Motel: - Budget Priced
If it wasn’t for the nearby gorge I doubt if there would be as much accommodation as is available in Katherine. After some internet checking I found that prices are quite high, however there is a cheaper option that for some reason has been overlooked in reviews of the towns accommodation providers – the 50 unit Katherine River Lodge Motel.
Off the main street and about 1.2 km along Giles Street is the motel and restaurant complex in well maintained gardens. Although we did find the managers ‘laid-back’ the premises are very well run.
There is guest use computers with reasonably fast internet connection ($4 all day fee), on-site small swimming pool with an all important shade cloth covering, plenty of off street parking and a bar and restaurant. Our room on the second level was a little cramped but had all facilities as shown in web site – and a very reasonable $105 per night price tag.
We did enjoy a 2 course meal in the restaurant, which was staffed by back-packing type international young women visitors – one from USA and the other France. Service was friendly and reasonably quick with generous ‘country style’ large serves.
The 2 back packing young women and their boy friends changed hats in the morning and became our room service attendants – at 8.30am while we were trying to have breakfast. No amount of ‘please come back later’ worked on the foursome who no doubt had plans for the day that did not include working at the establishment. Interesting customer service habits they had picked up along the way – LOL. The sliding door that separated bathroom from the rest of the unit did not seem to want to work – so much for privacy, but luckily Lady Gaw and I have been married for over 40 years.
Quaint place that had a large ‘Business for sale – price $1.8 million’ outside. Hope the new owners get to read this review - LOL

Gorge Caravan Park: Camping with wallabies
This campground is located neare the Katherine Gorge Visitors Centre. You can see wallabies and goana's when you're camping there, but there isn't a lot of luxury.
You're camping in the wild. I especially loved it because it was the first time I had rain in 4 weeks.

Riverview Caravan Park: Right near the hot springs.
This caravan park is a bit away from the town centre, but is the perfect location if you want to visit the natrual hot springs here or do some Barra fishing. The caravan park is located about 20 minutes walk back out of town, but it backs right on to the River Flora with some great fishing spots right close by also the Mataranka hot spings are about 10 minutes stroll away from the site.
