Ormiston Gorge Camp Sight: Sleep under the stars
Stayed here- 27th May 2006.
We just chose this as it was close to where we where when it got dark.
There's an honesy box to pay at (AU$6.50pp). Has very hard, rocky ground to put up your tent in.
There's toilets, a seperate washing-up sink (cold water), picknick tables and free bbq's that take a special technique to light.
The night sky is amazing here, so many stars to look at, and such clear skies. We only heard the dingos but they do come into camp sometimes to feed on the scraps, there's a lot of signs telling people to keep the place clean.
We had an interesting evening here, being nosy watching a couple putting up what can be described as a home away from home, they even had glass wine glasses, china plates a washing-up bowl and were complaining about no hot water in the sinks! Don't quite get the point of people like this camping, it's not really gettign away from it all is it?
Unique Quality: In the heart of the West MacDonnell Ranges, with lots of walks close by. At the sight itself is the Pound Walk, which we did and it was fantastic, a long walk but well worth it, you go through all the gorges, past the hills, saw some rock wallabies, by some pools.
This walk would definatley be closed in the wet season, but there was an information centre nearby and they have all the information on the conditions.
