Still Cold in the Morning in Mid-August

I thought that August was early Spring in Australia, but it was still plenty cold in the Uluru area. We even had frost on the tents the second morning. However, it warmed up nicely when the sun came out. There was one good thing about it being cold though. We were not bothered by the biting flies that can be a nuisance around Uluru.

Not Cheap But a Convenient Option for Campers

We arrived at the Ayers Rock Campground around 16:25. The rest of the group was going to the Sounds of Silence dinner and show at the Ayers Rock Resort. Their pick up time was 17:00, so we barely had time to set up the tents after checking in. I had decided not to go since I thought the Sounds of Silence was overpriced at 159 AUD (it's now 164 AUD), especially because I do not drink alcohol. I got a chicken, bacon, caesar with salad sandwich (5.50 AUD) from the mini-market, and walked to the Imalung Lookout to watch the sun set on Uluru instead.

The campground was nice but crowded; however, it was surprisingly quiet for so many people. There are running water toilets and hot water showers. We had two campsites for 7 people in 5 tents. Zyg and I pitched our tents on one campsite the first night but moved over with the others for the second night. There was room and we were not on the path to the toilets like at the first site. A non-powered site is 36 AUD for two people and 15.50 for each additional person. They also have two bedroom cabins for 150 AUD. See also a videoclip of the magpies singing at night.
