the lost camel is a funky hotel in the greater complex of ayers rock resort. with bright colorful rooms and lots of space, its a cool place to crash after a hard days walking in the heat. the hotel has an awesome pool, and you can get drinks from the outdoors bar while poolside. rooms do NOT have a tv, but offer a stereo and some nature cd's, a nice touch since you are in the wild outback.

this really is in the middle of nowhere, and is more of a truckstop for the trucks that come through. there is a few basic cabins and a campground. its popular with people doing the big road trips. a wicked breakfast is served and you can sit outside by the kangaroos and emus and eat your meal. amenities are very basic, but it has all that you could want for a one night stopover, as what most people do.

If you are headed to Uluru, you have two major choices, camping or staying in the Voyages resort. The Voyages' resort is the only hotel chain in Yulara, the town outside of the national park. Luckily for you the people at Voyages realize that not everyone travels the same way, so they have actually developed 5 or 6 distinct properties there in Yulara to meet your needs.

The one that Sarah and I chose was the Outback Pioneer, which is the least expensive personal living space option. What I mean by this is that there is a camping and hostel option, but the Outback Pioneer is the least expensive that has a private bathroom.

The option that is available actually states bunkbeds as the accommodation, but if you go away from peak time, you have a good chance of getting a double bed and a single bed in your room.

The facilities were perfectly fine for three days, and the entire community becomes a small resort after the first day.

There is also a pool for swimming, a bar and outdoor community area to get a beer, as well as an outback style grill for your culinary delights.

You can also cross across the resort to the town centre and enjoy dinner at Gecko's, which you can bill back to your room. There is also a supermarket and souvenir shops located here.

AYERS ROCK RESORT - OUTBACK PIONEER LODGE: ONE BIG MONOPOLY

The entire town of Yulara was borned out to support the great tourist attractions that are Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Yulara is Ayers Rock Resort and vice versa. The entire resort-plex is made up of various types of accommodation, ranging from campling grounds, hostels to the most posh hotel you can find in a desert. It's a monopoly so prices would be more exhorbitant that you would imagined. There are free shuttle buses connecting the various types of lodging, all ending up in the middle of "town" when restaurants, souvenir shops and grocery shops all reside. I stayed at the Outback Pioneer Lodge within the resort which is catered for hostelites. You can share dorms (beds from A$40 a night onwards) or get your own private rooms (with and without ensuite) from A$154 onwards. Quite a "steal"!

The view, the view, the view! Enough to wipe out your grievances on that obscene amount of money spent on lodging.

Longitude 131 (a Voyages Resort Group) is simply unique and awesome. Accomodations, food, service and ambiance are all 5-star plus.

I have never stayed in any resort like it before. It consists of only 15 individually-designed and brilliantly appointed "tents" and each has a private view of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the extraordinary landscape of the Outback of Central Australia (but still within the Northern Territory).

This all-inclusive resort offers airport transfers, all food, snacks, beverages & wines/spirits, tours and accommodations and is the only resort that actually views Uluru.

The resort has a large pool, viewing areas and several rest-relax spots but the draw is always the "rock" and it can be seen from almost everywhere on the property.

The complimentary tours and events are incredible.

Sunset champagne toasts to Uluru, 5-star cuisine dinner under the stars, astronomy lectures and sky viewing, digideroo concert, sunset walks and canapes/champagne at the base of Uluru, sunrise walks and "brekkie" (breakfast) at the base of Uluru, tours of the Cultural center and so many more.

There is a total of 15 private, luxury tents featuring:
    • King-size bed (twin available upon request) • Air Conditioning / Heating • Bath Robes • Private Bathroom • Shower • Shaving Outlet • Hair Dryers • Mini Bar • CD Player • Lounge • Arm Chair • Writing Desk • Tea & Coffee making facilities • In-Room Safe • Pool Towels • Smoke Detectors • Direct Dial ISD/STD Telephone • Daily Cleaning • Evening Turndown Service

Each elevated tent also tells a story of an early Australian pioneer or explorer with pictures and narratives throughout. The walls have a unique interior design in earthy natural tones, finishes and fibres with an eclectic mix of classical colonial and contemporary pieces. Wardrobes and vanity basins are similar early 1900's Australian food chests and wash troughs.

The white dome roof & flowing fabric draped from the center "big top" create the illusion of camping but only in comfort. A bedside switch can raise the floor-to ceiling window blinds to allow Uluru at sunrise to work its magic. These eco-green rooms are designed to remain cool in summer & warm in winter with individual controls.

The Dune House, in the middle of the "camp" site, is a huge communal facility and central meeting place for all Longitude 131° guests where meals are served and where the reception is available to meet any needs or wants.

The Dune House also includes a library with maps, a comprehensive collection of historical and current books, games, a large screen TV, DVD player (with library) & internet station. You can access the well-stocked bar and enjoying a drink in the lounge or out on the deck with stunning views of Uluru and the surrounding desert.

The peace and solitude of Longitude 131 was clearly evident as soon as I stepped out of my complimentary Range Rover transport from the Ayers Rock Airport.

The dirt road leading to the Longitude 131 "campsite" is about 5-10 minutes from the main Ayers Rock Resort area.

A short climb to the top of a sand dune brings you to the communal "Dune House" where reception, dining, entertainment and socializing occurs.

Once there, you walk to your "tent" and are shown all the aspects that make it "glamping"-glamour camping.

Choices after that are as simple as just enjoying the view of Uluru through the floor to ceiling bay windows the foot of your bed or everything from a Harley-Davidson Tour to a Helicopter Ride of the area (which apply extra charges) or you can opt for complimentary tours as I did that include:

Uluru (Ayers Rock) & Kantju Gorge Sunset tour
Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) & Walpa Gorge tour
Table 131 – Dining Under the Stars
Cultural Center and Kata Tjuta Views
    Uluru Sunrise Walk
    Mulgara Gallery and Township Tour
    Self Guided bush walks

I thoroughly enjoyed my sunset walking tour of Uluru and watching the rock colors transform right before my eyes, the dinner under the stars, the Uluru sunrise walk around the base (about 9 km), the Cultural Center, and the sunset toast. (I did take SOME time to just enjoy the solitude of my tent overlooking Uluru).

I can't praise enough the staff of Longitude 131 from the guides to the room attendants to the chef and wait staff--all were awesome and instrumental in making this "luxury wilderness" adventure so special.

I had so many little sidetrips during my 5 week adventure in Australia (and Thailand/Singapore) this trip that I forgot that Longitude 131 was all-inclusive and this was a most pleasant surprise.

So, champagne it was--- and the anticipation of knowing that I would soon be enjoying a fusion of Australian cuisine and both indigenous & international flavors. The first of my gourmet, 5-star cuisine meals consisted of:

    Cauliflower Soup (Almond Buerre Noisette)

Braised Rabbit and Black Truffle Raviolo (Olive Tapenade, Baby Spinach, Lemon Olive Oil) or

Butter Poached Western Australian Lobster Tail (Green Asparagus, Poached Egg, Pickled Radish)

French Sable Biscuits (Dark Chocolate Marquise-Orange Glaze)--and this was just lunch.

Dinners were even more exotic with everything from Venison to Barramundi.

Of course, a wide selection of beverages, wines, and beer made for a great time in the Dune House or back in the room (which was also stocked).

There was nothing less than 5-star quality in everything about Longitude 131. From each of the individually "themed" tents (I was in the Burke-Wills [ Australian Outback explorers] tent), you could, as the resort touts, "Get as close to serenity as possible, rejuvenate the body, stimulate the mind, activate your senses and liberate the spirit".

I would suggest going online to their website to really capture the beauty and essence of the resort and area and even ordering their DVD for a more intense look at this "glamping."

This is a rather nice place, everyone there was in a really good mood and cracking jokes and just having a really good time!
I didn't actually stay here but know someone who did, and they told me the camping here was free, so I thought I'd share the info.
When I was there in 97 a storm had just blown away the toilet building leaving only the concrete base and the toilets. So funny!

Possibilities for helicopter and camel rides.

The Lost Camel is a very trendy `boutique` hotel, its very nice but totally soulless.
The swimming pool was stunning, contemporary shapes and colours and water which was just the right temperature, but clutter it up with people swimming in it or relaxing around it and it looked rather harsh

the service from the tiny bar was good but very slow, and there is no restaurant though the central plaza of the resort, with shops restaurant and take away is just behind the hotel

the rooms are spotlessly clean and very comfortable, they have CD players but no TV, there is a large screen TV in the lobby, if theres something you particularly want to watch stake your claim to the remote control early..........we wanted to see The Rabbit Proof Fence, much to the [loudly expressed] disgust of a European guest

there is internet access but at A$2 for 10 minutes it was ridiculously expensive

the most unique things we found about the Lost Camel were the door tag, which instead of saying `do not disturb` said `leave me alone`..........[this made us roar with laughter we are easily amused ], and the discovery that the shampoo supplied came from our home town in the UK, 13,000 miles away

the accommodation was very expensive, as it all is here, and the hotel is completely non-smoking

No trip is complete without a visit to the typical aussie loo! Well, not quite the bush, but this 'blokes' and 'sheilas' thing I saw along the Great Victoria Desert, I just had to capture! Only in Australia (in the outback) cld you actually see smthg like this. Check out the drawings on the wall.

I found the graffitti drawings a surprising delight after being on the road for 6-7 hrs and while beautiful it was red road and blue skies all the way :)
