Travel Tips for Byron Bay

Climb the inspiring Mt Warning

by lachydragon

Mt Warning and the Burringbar Range form an impressive backdrop to the North-West skyline when you look out across Byron Bay. A climb up Mt Warning makes an impressive day trip out of Byron Bay and one I would strongly recommend! Access to Mt Warning is via the town of Mullumbimby about 25 minutes North of Byron on the Pacific Highway. From Mullum' you then enter the Mt Warning National Park and drive to the foot of the mountain where you can park your car.

The walk up takes about 5 hours return and the final part involves a small section where you must hold onto chains to climb the rocky summit. The rest of the walk is through stunning littoral rainforest enjoying the abundance of wildlife from 'scrub trukeys' to lyrebirds, green catbirds (yes, that's right CATbirds - when you hear their call you will understand that one!) and the occasional wallaby.

At the summit you are rewarded with stunning views out towards Northern NSW - Byron Bay, Lennox Head, West towards the fertile hills around Casino and Lismore and North along the coast to the Queensland Border and beyond to the touristy Gold Coast.

Make sure you take plenty of water and let somebody know where you are going and when you plan to return. Also in winter ensure that you do not push on to the summit if it is past 12 noon as the eastern slopes can get quite dark if you return after sunset or even in the mid afternoon.

A day-trip that I stongly recommend to anyone who enjoys walking and seeing Australia's great outdoors!

TeeHee..... I asked Dad if we could stop the car for a photo so he stopped in this bend, I was hoping for somewhere where we could pull-off the road. Anyway, we take the photo and then 5 minutes later a HUGE semi-trailer comes hurtling past...hmmm, I think we'll be a bit more choosy about photo stops next time!!!

Quaint Art and Craft Shops

by aussirose

Byron Bay has lovely art and craft shops. Everyone there is into nature and very talented. I love to just go window shopping at Byron and of course stop and have devonshire tea in one of the many cafes there.

Wategos Beach

by lachydragon

Wategos Beach sits in between the main stretch of Byron Bay and the Lighthouse and is a great beach for surfing. At the moment the main part of Byron Bay has lost a bit if sand (due to the natural shifting of sand around the coastal areas) and at low tide you have to walk quite a way out to find any good waves.

Wategos Beach, however is really pretty at the moment and great for swimming. It is also home to some of the most expensive property in Byron Bay - one place was rented out this summer for $11,000 per week! In spite of the housing, the beach is uninterrupted and the housing has been restrained in terms of height - a great practice in beautiful coastal areas like Byron Bay (do a search on Gold Coast, Australia for some good examples of how to ruin a beautiful sea-scape by over-development!)

To reach Wategos you will have to drive in along Lihthouse Rd but parking is quite scarce in peak times so my recommendation is to park at Palm Valley and take the 400m walk up over the headland to get stunning views of the beach (this is where by main Byron Bay photo was taken).

Eastern Most Point In Australia

by taznanna

Byron Bay is quite the tourist spot, and I always associate it with hippie's for some reason, maybe because I found that the people around here are quite laid back.
I have been here many times in my life so far, a few times when I was younger. I love the area up here, it's a really nice spot when there isn't heaps of people around. I love the lighthouse up here too, I'm not sure why, I think because of the contrast between the white paint and the bright blue sky on a sunny day. It is still currently in use.

peace and quiet in my retirement trailer

by dayes

it wasn't exactly how i expected to start my East Coast Australian tour, but it was definitely a fantastic experience. Byron Bay was so serene, and calm and laid back that i total could retire there.
i've never seen so many stars in my whole life. and i got to see Australia's constallation. the sky was so clear and the whole town was so quiet. my only regret is that i didn't go skydiving while i was there. the budget, unfortunately, just simply did not allow for it.

definitely a place to go if you want to kick back and relax.
