Built in 1901,the Byron Bay...
by Jimmytravel
Built in 1901,the Byron Bay Lighthouse,is Cape Byron's crowning glory. It is fully automated, and the beam steadily pierces through 40km of darkness every night. There's a small museum few meters from the lighthouse. This is also the most easternly point on the Australian mainland.
Ballina
by Colzy
Ballina is about 34km from Byron and a beautiful town to visit. It's beaches are incredible. The fact that the town is about double the size of Byron it offers more amenities. Shelley Beach and Shelley Beach Cafe should be a 'must-see' for any traveller. I recommend the banana and coconut cheescake at the Cafe. The Ballina River offers a number of possibilities for water sports and is my Dad's favourite fishing destination. Shaw's Bay is great for kids and the barbecues situated there make for a fantastic and affordable day out for families. A walk along the break wall is awesome as you watch the surfers to your left and the fishing trawlers going out to sea from your right. Very nice spot and only about 2.5 hours from Brisbane.
Cape Byron Lighthouse
by ValbyDK
The Lighthouse is constructed in 1901, and stands on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland.
The Lighthouse is still in service today, and you can join a tour if you want to take a close look.
We didn’t go inside the Lighthouse, but only enjoyed the spectacular view from the Lighthouse.
Meet the colourful locals
by Colzy
Byron Bay is famous in Australia for being the 'dole bludger' capital of the nation. In other words, many believe that people collect unemployment benefits and do nothing but enjoy this idyllic setting (maybe we are just jealous!).
Alot of these people fit the stereotype of a 'dole bludger' and so you may instantly recognise them with dreads in their hair, hippie style attire and relaxed attitude. They are a Byron institution and really give the place a unique atomsphere. Of course I'm generalising a little and many may very well be employed although you wouldn't think it by just looking at them.
Anyways, have a chat if you can, they are almost always extremely colourful characters and a permanent fixture of the Byron landscape. Pictured is one such local with his guitar relaxing in the shade by the beach on a Monday morning.
Byron Bay - Paradise

"I love Byron"
I only spent 3 days in Byron Bay, but it was one of my favorite places in Australia during my 3 different travels to the country. The town is small, relaxed, and friendly. You can party with the young backpackers, hang with the locals and "The Tracks", or go on some great hikes. There is a great hippy element to the town that reminded me of my home back in Oregon, but at the same time it's a big desitination for family holidays. I would definitely recommend this city for anyone looking for some good budget travel in a small/medium sized town.
