Georges Gold Mine post.

by Curios

I've been up to coffs harbour before, but never had the opportunity to visit George's Gold Mine. What activities are available at that place in relation to the name of the site? Is it hands on or just look? I'd like to know before February please. Thank you. -Curious

Hello, thank you Jen for the referral and yes I do have information on my pages about Georges Goldmine as does Bernie. Actually she and I saw it for the first time together. It is a very interesting place really and most people are quite taken with the mine itself. The stamping machine was fascinating and there is a copy of George's old house to be inspected too. It is worth the trip out from Coffs and should take care of half of a day for you.

Check out Bernies page and then fill in any gaps by going to the Gold Mine site,
by googling George's Gold Mine.

Travel Tips for Coffs Harbour

Glorious subtropical laziness

by Jerelis

Although bigger than most NSW coastal towns (its population is now well over 20.000), it is typically occupied by retirees seeking the warm north of the state and by holiday-makers eager to enjoy themselves and spend some money. The appearance of Coffs Harbour has not been enhanced by the emergence of high-rise units which remind one of suburban Sydney rather than a holiday resort.

Nonetheless, it has a kind of glorious subtropical laziness attached to it (even the McDonald's has palm trees growing around it) while at the same time wanting to be considered a thriving city.

Bring your own bananas

by unravelau

Yes, sad but true, we are short on bananas this year due to cyclonic conditions that ruined thousands of banana trees. So it might be helpful to pack your own this year, where-ever you can get a good bargain. It is mostly warm here, even in winter you would rarely need an overcoat. Maybe one all weather one would be useful and maybe a warm jumper in July/August. The rest of the time, anything goes really. People often even shop in beachwear. Be sure to pack a wide brimmed hat. There are plenty of supermarkets and the same range of supplies that you will find in the larger cities are available here. Plenty of chemist shops too, where you may get your scripts filled. Such photo opportunities. Bring all that you have and you will be able to use the lot. Yes, and definitely the sunscreen and as I have mentioned before, 30+ at least. Bananas

Mullaway

by iandsmith

North of Coffs Harbour are a number of fine beaches. Names like Sapphire, Emerald, Sandy and Arrawarra spring readily to mind. Another one is Mullaway, located just north of a booming little village called Woolgoolga, itself idyllically located beside the ocean.
Mullaway has half a dozen streets, a caravan park, general store and a couple of B&Bs.
It's an area with a future rooted in tourism as most of the land around is designated National Park.
This shot is looking south towards Woolgoolga from the end of Headland Road.

Whale Watching Cruise

by Favzoz

The cruise company who conducted our trip onto Coffs Harbour cannot guarantee that you will see whales once you are out there. We went in August and we managed to sight a humpback whale who put on quite a show for us. It leapt out of the water on several (4 or 5?) occasions as we cruised a safe distance away, so as not to disturb. The cruise we took wasn't crowded, as it was off-peak season. It was a sunny, blustery day. We took jackets (a good idea), wore hats and sunscreen (as always). The trip lasted about an hour. It was a good way to work up an appetite for lunch at the Marina, afterwards! I also took a seasickness preventative (just in case). My son didn't. Both of us were fine. I've been on a Pacific oceanliner three weeks and avoided seasickness. The worst experience I had, though, was seasickness from an overnight on a 25 ft. boat on Delaware Bay. I decided to play safe. Tickets at the Marina Booking Centre. I recommend this trip if you've never seen a whale in its environment. Kids love it. Adults, too.

If you come in the winter........

by unravelau

There is quite a wonderful floral display for this time of year too. I have these zygo cactus living with me on my patio...... Others that make a great display also are the point settia in a variety of colours too. So even a trip to the nurseries and gardens are well worth the time spent on a fine day.
