Quiet hostel
by bluesmama about Backpackers by the bay
This hostel is just outside Airlie Beach so it is nice and quiet. It is only about a 5 minute walk to all the restaurants and bars.
So if you like to go out for a few beers and laughs but don't want to party (or hear other people partying) all night long this is the hostel for you! Good views of the ocean
Out of town
No. 1 big hostel in Australiasia
by tournoy about Wake Up hostel
This hostel is big, but beautiful. It has spacious rooms for a hostel, good bathroom facilities and secure acces to the floors.
The reception staff is very nice and helpfull, and that makes a stay in beautiful Sydney even better.
The TV lounge is a great place to hang out and meet new people, the kitchen is a bit too small for such a big hostel. And more than often not all the burners work what makes it an even bigger task to cook. Overall this is a nice hostel to spend your time in Sydney. It´s not the cheapest one, but it´s quality I´m looking for, and you get that here.
Go cgeck out the Side Bar in the basement. Good place to eat and party hard. Staff friendlieness. Clean and spacious rooms. Good fall out place in the city whether you want to take the train, bus or go by foot, it´s all in the vicinity.
Good Place to stay in Airlie Beach
by mad4travel about Boathaven Spa resort
This is a great place to stay in Airlie Beach and an ideal base for the Great Barrier Reef.
Its about a 7 min walk from the town itself which makes it quieter than staying centrally - good idea if you are not a total party dude like me.
There is a mix of studio apartments and 1 bed apartments that can be combined together to make a 2 bed apartment. Ideal for families or those travelling in a group. All apartments are air conditioned.
You can arrange a variety of tours from reception including diving the reef or cruising the Whitsunday islands.
The airport bus will do a pick up and drop off to Prosperine airport for $16aus each way.
We were there during festival week in November. There was a great firework display on the beach on Nov 5th. Great views (see photo) from the rooms. The 2 bed suites have Jacuzzis on the balcony - a weird experience watching the world go by from your bathtub!
Very friendly proprietors from New Zealand.
Nice pool and hot tub
There is a small gym and games room
There are laundry facilities in each room
More than party on the beach in the tropics...

After 17 month in Australia in 2002 and 2006/2007, I'm back in Germany an still missing down under occasionally. Let's see if I find the time to come up with some good memories here from time to time...
It would be boring to repeat all tourist attractions given in every tourist guide, so many if not all of my must-sees are also "off the beaten track" (I KNOW anyone's saying that ;), but Mt. Bartlefrere, the Palm Creek Festival or small r outback estaurants are rather nor the crowded "place to be" a so don't wonder if you've never heard of them before -and find them excrucially boring if you get there because you don't share my taste. :)
More is to come, but that'll take a while...

Im not sure about Sydney, but I know that Urban Central seems to be quite a good choice in Melbourne. I walk past it everyday on the way to and from work, and there are always people coming in and out.
There is a McDonalds directly across the road, a service station next door that sells groceries, a tram outside that runs into the city and also to st kilda, and the casino is a 5 min walk.
