This little town is situated between Sydney and Goulburn on the Hume HIghway and is the gateway to the Southern Highlands. The town was founded in about the 1850s by steel workers from Sheffield hence its other name of New Sheffield. Its iron industry was not successful and was closed down around 1880.
Mittagong today is a rather nice little town with a population of perhaps 5000. It has a good RSL club which has good food at tremendously good prices. It also has a Mc donalds which is popular with the younger generation..

"Gone, but not forgotten"

It's a bit sad really. I can still remember when the Hume Highway used to go through Mittagong. I can still remember the traffic holdups and why they had to build the new freeway.
One thing I can also remember is that where the road used to split in two, there was a memorial. It's still there, hasn't changed except for a new coat of paint.
It's odd in a way. The bypassing is probably what's saved Mittagong and Berrima. Now people come because they want to be there, not because they're passing through. Hence the boost in tourist traffic over the ensuing years.

Mittagong is a town around 130km South West of Sydney. It is in the center of Sydney and Canberra. It's a friendly, clean and scenic town. Surrounded in farm land, hills and lookouts one cant say no to Mittagong. It is a historic town and fairly bustling at day. On your way to Canberra i reccomend you stop over at Mittagong- you will find whatever you're looking for there.
