Tempus II
by iandsmith
This is a shot of Tempus II, at the time of writing the latest in a now long line of new wineries in Australia's most popular wine tasting area. While others have evoked the traditional or rural styles, this one has opted for a different direction and stands in contrast to some of the others nearby.
It is linked to a famous wine family called McGuigan. The daughter had been dragged back to Pokolbin after a successful career in catering and starting pushing a particular wine brand. Unlucky. The French to offence to the fact that it was one of their traditional names and slapped a writ on her thus condemning 2 years of work. Almost, but not quite daunted, she carried on and thus was born Tempus Two (second time, get it?). I can still vividly remember when Pokolbin Estate was built back in the late 60's. Thinking how modernistic it looked and what a dramatic bit of architecture it was.
In the new millenium it doesn't even rate a sideways glance, such has been the development of Pokolbin. With each passing month some new edifice arises to entice the eye, soon to be outdone by another just down the road.
From corrugated iron roofs supported by wooden posts to the type of building you see today has all happened in the space of 40 years. From a backyard industry to a thriving, internationally renowned business, this has been the story of Australian wine and has changed its drinking habits irrevocably.
"R" is for Roche

Well, since they built and paid for the gardens, it's only fair that they put their initials on it!
This shot is of the formal garden with wishing fountain, one of thirteen gardens in the complex.
The Heart of the Hunter Wine Valley
by trisanna
We spent two full days in the Hunter Valley and loved every minute of it. By living in the city, we just crave country life. In Pokolbin, we had a lovely one bedroom cottage set in the vines and just minutes away from the vineyards of the Valley. Hunter Valley is around a two hour drive north of Sydney. From Sydney, there are tour operators that organize day trips to the hunter wine valley, where you visit a few wineries. We really enjoyed renting a car and driving through the tiny towns off route 1 to get to hunter valley.
Pokolbin is literally in the center of everything. It's a few minute drive to the best vineyards, restaurants and shops. Cessnock is the main town, which is about a 15 minute drive, which has more affordably priced restaurants and super markets.
If you don't want to drink, there is still stuff to do!
The Hunter Valley Gardens are quite lovely and offer fountain shows. Also, you aren't far from the central coast and close to ocean front towns, which offer other activities or scenic drives.
We spent two nights in the Hunter Valley over the Easter Holiday. This is isn't the best time to visit, unless you want to travel over the holiday. We had a harder time finding accomodation and usually most places want a three night minimum. Also, if you come during the week rather than weekend, the rates are lower!
