Travelling between Sydney and Port Macquarie in late February and fancing breaking the journey in the Hunter Valley in one direction. Unfortunately, it would have to be a Saturday night either way and I gather accommodation prices are often hiked for Friday/Saturday nights. Any tips to get round this, please?

Wotif.com is a useful site. Another choice is to consider local pubs. Many offer cheap and cheerful accommodation. The only downside is the Friday and Saturday night pub noise but then you might like to join in?
Just back from Aus. Managed to juggle days to stay Wed/Thur nights and found a lovely B&B on Broke Road opposite Hannigan's pub, called Grapevines. Just as well we weren't hoping to stay that weekend as we'd have had no hope due to Whitney Houston and Tom Jones performing at Hope Winery.
There's lot of chances to get some good shots off around Pokolbin, either the background of the Broken Back Range, the lovely variety of architecture or the floral highlights. Since the Hunter Valley Gardens have opened, they have really put all other horticultral efforts into second place. This particular shot is taken in the shopping area adjacent to the gardens, also owned by Roche. It is a particular favourite of mine as the lily pad seem suspended in mid air.
There's not a lot of Empire Hotels in Oz. While your Royal and your Railway are common, Empires are on the wane.
This old Federation style gem in Kurri Kurri with the wrought iron verandah is situated down where the railway used to run and has recently been tarted up a little though it's patronized mainly by locals in this working class town. The Cessnock area has many like this, built during the mining boom from the turn of the century over 100 years ago up to World War II.
These days they've had a renaissance with the revival of mining and the even bigger tourist boom of the nearby vineyards. Every mining town or village in the area has at least one and Kurri Kurri has three of which I'm aware.
