Great rooms Great Location

At first i booked in to the cheaper part of the hotel which is above the bars, very basic and rahter depressing, but then they moved me to the boutique part and they kept the same price and the room was stunning, bright, clean, modern, bang opp the beach,

Unique Quality: No pool, but who needs a pool when you have the beach, breakfast was basic but very nice and fresh

We'll Take It !

As detailed in my 'Warnings & Dangers' tip, shortly after our arrival in the country, we found ourself checking into the Coogee Hotel, in the suburbs of Sydney. It was a bright sunny August day so we had a look around the establishment and went out onto the roof patio for a good look at the area from there. I remember that we were not too impressed by all the tacky looking plastic chairs scattered about. Shortly afterward, we retired to our room, a suite of some sort, where we and the children relaxed on the bed in mid-afternoon. The next thing we knew, we woke up in total darkness not knowing what was going on or where the children were. As it turned out, we were so jet-lagged that we had passed out for hours and it was about 3 AM when we came to! We scurried around the room and found that the children were also sleeping and had not wandered off somewhere while we were dead to the world!
We were now wide awake so we decided to clear out and hit the road with our rental car. I remember walking through the darkened lobby of the hotel with our luggage and banging my shins into some potted plant holder! We had decided to head north toward Newcastle to enjoy some beach scenery so off we went in the dark - now totally famished with hunger. The first place we came across was a hamburger stand, so an Aussie burger with the works was our first breakfast!

The Coogee Bay Hotel

by jolou

The Coogee Bay Hotel (Coogee) has good food, good bar and a club afterwards. None though they are really strict on ID - my friend and I (26 and 32) got sent back to our hostel one night to get our passports!!

See the obvious things:- Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach, Darling Harbour.

A lovely little beach town to stay in is Coogee Bay. It's a 15 mins by bus from the city and has a nice beach for swimming and sunbathing. The main bar there is the Coogee Bay Hotel which gets very busy at nite - usually full of travellers!! Lazing on the beach after a heavy nite at the Coogee Bay Hotel!!!

Best meeting point

Extremely busy place just next to one of Sydney's best beaches. Wonderful people from all around the world, nice music, good food. If you look for a good time, it's a great place to go to:)

New Years Eve in Sydney with a teenager

by cathygunn

My son will be 18 on New Years Day, any suggestions on where can we go on New Years Eve?

Are you from Sydney or are you visiting? The biggest thing to do in Sydney on New Year's Eve is to see the fireworks. They are amazing! Best spot is from Lady Macquarie's Chair but it gets awfully busy so you'd need to get there early.

18yr old Australian guy.

New Year's Eve.

Sounds like he should be at a fun bar, no?

Even a teenager gets a kick out of the fireworks in Sydney. I'm telling you - they're the best in the world! ;o)

Sure we would like to watch the fire works and I thought of Lunar Park, but tickets are for over 18's only and I was told that Australia was pretty strict on under age?

Can you suggest any fun bars?

Yes, Australia is strict on age.

An area to consider perhaps would be Coogee. There are a couple of bars which I always find great (Coogee Bay Hotel and The Palace). Coogee Bay Hotel will be going crazy on NYE/NYD (with a big English crowd which may or may not suit you!) and the Palace has a number of floors to suit everyone - including a club, pool tables and an upstairs terrace which serves great food and cocktails and has a fabulous view of the bay.
