Rose Bay
When I arrived in Syney I stayed for a couple of nights in a hostel, until I could find a flat-share. Spent three months living in Rose Bay which I absolutely loved...easy to get into town, but nice & quiet too!

We spent several pleasant and affordable hours cruising the Sidney harbour via the extensive ferry system. Purchased a pass and rode several different ferries which permitted us to view the opera house, harbour bridge, etc., from a different perspective. Trip to Parramatta a must!
Sydney is built around a harbour so you are never far away from the water. When in Sydney there are many things you can do in the harbour. You can do numerous walks, rent a kayak near the Spit Bridge, take one of the ferry to the numerous destinations around the harbour or a tour. There are even sailing trips that you can book in the tourist info centre. On boxing day the amount of boats on the water in unbelievable. This is the day the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race starts.
Redfern, where 41.6% of people live in public housing, has a poor reputation among those who haven't been there, yet it has a repository of interesting architecture, some galleries and an interesting park or two. It was named after the renowned surgeon William Redfern, who certainly came a long way after being sentenced to death for his part in the mutiny of the Nore in 1797. After serving four years he was transported to Sydney and gained a conditional pardon in 1803 followed by a full pardon in 1804, the year he was strongly advocating smallpox vaccination.
Such was his success that Governor Lachlan Macquarie gave him over 100 acres of land where the suburb now stands.
Summer weather in Sydney is warm to hot. Basically, you need to bring light weight trousers, shorts, t/shirts/ swimmers/ flip flops (thongs)good evening shoes and smart casual clothes for evening wear.
