Cultural opportunities abound at the Opera House
by pchamlis
Everyone wants to SEE the Sydney Opera House. Most people tour it in some form or fashion. I'd think that the most entertaining and memorable visit would be to see or hear a show of some kind.
Among the entities that call the Opera House home are..
The Australian Ballet, www.australianballet.com.au, Phone 02/9223 9522
The Australian Chamber Orchester, www.aco.com.au, Phone 02/9357 4111
Opera Australia, www.opera-australia.org.au, Phone 02/9699 1099
Sydney Symphony Orchestra, www.symphony.org.au, Phone 02/9334 4644 I only wish we could have had an opportunity to hear the Sydney Symphony or Chamber Orchestra in the Opera Hall. They were not performing during our visit to Sydney.

Go to Circular Quay. Beautiful waterside walkway. Do the local tourist attractions..ie..Harbour Bridge, Opera House,. Take a river cat(ferry) up the small river that heads inland. Takes about an hour to reach the restaurant at the end of it. Say 'hi' to Melanie's folks,..they live there. Walking in the narrow streets. Many things are unchanged in the 200 hundred years of Sydney's exsistence.

Visit Nielsen Park. It is amazing to find such mix of yesteryear and modern beach culture harmonise here. This area is another example of the beauty and the vastness of the Sydney Harbour, with the right mix of open space and shady reserves, plus one of the best beaches on the harbour. The beach is actually called Shark Beach, though, I'm told a net protects swimmers and there hasn't been a shark attack here for decades. The beach with its open aspect at the head of a small promontory, catching the rolling swell from the harbour, combined with the stronger currents along this side of the harbour, ensures deep, mostly clean water for swimming. The contrast with Clifton Gardens across the way is awesome. The surrounding parkland is a favourite for Sydneysiders with numerous walks out to the rocks and headlands, with broad, spectacular views of the harbour. There's abundance of space and choice of picnic grounds, will it be in the shady park behind the changing rooms or on the open lawn above the beach? Oh, but wait! You can stroll to the pleasant gardens of one of Sydney's most historic sites, Vaucluse House, built in 1827 by William Charles Wentworth and now open to the public. To get there, walk down Greycliffe Avenue and turn left, continuing for two blocks until you see the large park on your right.

Clothing during Winter
by hanabiwaiwai
Do not underestimate the winter (June-July)... it is very cold especially when there is wind as well as at coastal and mountainous areas. Layers would be the best - a long sleeve T-shirt / sweater, a fleece and a windbreaker.
