Hostel Accommodation at Christmas

by Donnydid

Greetings!

I will be coming to Sydney in December and already the Hostels are putting up the "Sold Out" signs up!
I have checked out the Hostels on Hostelbookers and Hostelworld but these hostels are much of a muchness, does anyone know of a little known hostel that will tick all the boxes and have accommodation available for Christmas and the New Year period?

Dave

i was surprised when i was trying to help another poster how many hostels are already booked for Xmas/New Year and the prices they are charging - $50 a night for a dorm bed

I found one in Bondi on BUG - Backbackers Ultimate Guide - that seemed to still have beds and only charged $28 for that period - it's new - no idea what it is like

I like the Alishan in Glebe - but that is very small - it is probably already booked

Travel Tips for Sydney

by lostaussie

Hire a car and do a tour of the coastline, culminating in a walk to Barrenjoey Lighthouse in Palm Beach. Any sunny day, be it summer or winter, the drive is magnificent. It is, of course, most enjoyable if you are not driving yourself, so the view can be fully appreciated.
Once you get past Mona Vale, the road offers stunning views, the ocean to the east and Pittwater to the west.

Sydney Beaches

by martin_nl

Sydney has some of the best beaches I have seen. Most well known are of course Bondi, Manly and Coogee, but others are great aswell. If you do the Bondi to Coogee scenic walk you will also pass beaches such as Bronte and Tamarama. If you do the Manly Scenic walk you will see many beaches along the way in Middle Harbour. North of Sydney are some of the best beached though like Palm Beach. Almost deserted so all for yourself. It is quite a trip to get here though, but it's worth the effort.

If you want to know more about both Scenic walks check out my off the beaten path tips.

Flying Foxes

by Gypsystravels

One of the highlighs to the garden for me were the "flying foxes". Flying Foxes are fruit bats and there were hundreds of them flying in the garden during daylight time making these horrible screaking sounds.

The park ranger informed us that our visit coincided with their mating season. (More info on my Botanic Gardens travelogue).

anzac spirit

by willy_wonka

anzac day is recognised every year on april the 25th, as a time to reflect for the brave soldiers who fought in the world wars, and even for those who fight today.

the anzac memorial in hyde park is simply beautiful, with calming waters and beautiful trees surrounding it. you can enter and pay your respects any time of the year, but it will be in april that the monument will see most of its offerings of rememberance.

lest we forget...

Packing List

by emerald125

You can get by easily in Sydney with mainly casual stuff unless you will be working... A all weather jacket would be good... one basic black outfit will take you anywhere :-) Sunscreen!!! lots if you are planning a working holiday it is fairly easy to get work.... remember to bring resume and references with you.
