Sydney has dozens of hostels and about 10 YHAs in its greater area. However it all depends on what your after, but my choice of location is certainly here in leafy inner city Glebe. There however are no beaches or throbbing nightlife around this area, but a few decent pubs and plenty of cheap places to eat. Interesting cafes and book stores. If your from Notting Hill, the East Village or Fitzroy then Glebe is the place to feel a little bit at home.
Unique Quality: The Friday night BBQ on the rooftop is a good way to meet fellow travellers. The spacious dorms generally have three to four beds and a sink. There is a well equiped kitchen and TV lounge in the basement.
The rooms and wash room facilities were clean and roomy enough so I did not feel like I had to give up all of my privacy.
As my stay was by now 14 years ago I can not advise any room rates.
Unique Quality: As I was traveling alone I liked the security with the number code door, with the code changed every day, instead of a key to the front door.......... although this gave me trouble once when I forgot the code it made me feel safe!
This place has a great vibe and good facilities. The front courtyard is a great place to hang out. It's very leafy and has a table tennis table. You can catch a bus to the city from right across the road and can walk a few minutes to the nearest pub (one of many in the area). Glebe is a very friendly and happy place with lots of things to do anytime of the day or night. Glebe markets (open on saturdays) is a great place to shop.
I highly recomend this place to anyone staying for a few days or a few months.
Prices start at approx $23.00 Aus for a dorm.
Unique Quality: central to the city & some of Sydney's best pubs & restaurants.
