Which of these for accommodation?

by quadrant6

We're a young couple from new zealand stopping over in sydney for a sun/mon/tues in january before heading to the NNSW coast.

We're wanting somewhere reasonably priced, central and if possible with a nice view/location (scenic wise). I'm not sure if we should be staying close to the rocks/darling harbour or just cbd central. Here are the options, most $ at top..

Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney, 27 O'Connell Street

Rendezvous Stafford Hotel, 75 Harrington Street

Medina Grand Harbourside, 55 Shelley Street, Darling Harbour

Meriton Serviced Apartments - Pitt Street

Metro Apartments On Darling Harbour, 132 Sussex Street

Things we want to do are : see around opera house, rocks area. maybe darling harbour, QVB building and pitt st area shopping. Ferry to watson bay and double bay. Possibly ferry to zoo if time. Fish markets on mon morning. china garden/chinatown
.

All of your choices are well situated or what you want to do. From personal experiences I can recommend Meriton Pitt Street. You will probably be best to ask for a high floor if a good view is important but the central location and the emenities are superb.

I can spell "amenities". Sorry.

Your choices are all good- however- January is ABSOLUTE peak time in Sydney, so don't leave your choice until the last moment.
The area around the Rocks is very attractive and there is a free bus that goes into CBD (hop on/hop off). Its also within walking distance to CBD.
Ferries run all day long. Try and get the Manly ferry and see this beautiful area of Sydney, - you will then have perfect view of harbourside homes.

Thanks. Yeah it does seem like the rocks would be a nice base to explore from. Especially since we can catch ferries and the free bus from there.

It's very hard when reading the accommodation reviews ... although the places I've picked are all mostly positive, there are a fair few negatives in there but that's always the way I guess.

One more on the table - Rydges World Square, if we stayed there it would be quite a bit cheaper and still central - though at the opposite end to the rocks.

Right! after further searching, It's down to one of these. both are the same price and seem pretty good.

Hyde Park In

or

Rendezvous Stafford

Hyde Park In has lots of public transport on it's door apparently which is good. Though the Rendezvous is arguably just as convenient with Circular Quay close by and potentially more of a stylish location.

Oh well up to me to decide now i guess... hopefully i can't go too wrong with either

We came from Sydney on Aug 19, stayed at Marriott Hyde Park, excellent location. Bus system in sydney is the best, bought a week pass at airport for $59 which include all buses, train in zone 1, and all ferries. Train station is at hyde park, this pass also include airport to hyde park by train, and this was the only train ride we did, while in sydney. 300 number buses run on Oxford street to circular Quay, all restaurants on Oxford street, only a block from hotel.

Travel Tips for Sydney

Free Sydney Guide booklets at the airport

by UKDaisy

When you arrive at Sydney airport, look out for the Sydney Guide Booklets available free of charge. It contains lots of information on what to see and do in Sydney, and includes suggested walking itineraries. You'll also find some discount vouchers for various tourist attractions at the back of the booklet.

by Dogspots

When visiting Sydney there are 2 things that are a must. Firstly take a nice stroll around the Botanical Gardens along the shoreline of the harbour. Secondly to relax, sit at the end of the Opera House pier and watch as the world passes you by. You won't regret it & it costs you nothing. Remember to take some bread for the ducks.

Manly

by dragontml

Manly is a peninsula, bounded by the sea on three sides. There are 18 beaches, coves and inlets to swim, sail in and enjoy, including Ocean Beach, Shelly Beach, Little Manly and Fairlight.

The Manly Summer Festival (December to March), The Food and wine festival (the first weekend in June), plus the Manly Jazz Festival - Australia's largest, longest and best known (During the Labour Day long weekend at the start of each October)

Contrast of styles

by iandsmith

At times in Sydney there's a juxtaposition of styles, especially when you get classic sandstone in front of typical glass skyscraper. I like just walking along and noting the difference, it's almost like wandering through an architectural art gallery with modern and classic intermixed.
Picture 4 was taken in Pitt Street while 3 & 5 are from Darling Harbour.
Picture 2 reminds me somewhat of a spaceship about to be launched.
