Great location, small rooms

Great location! The hotel's employees were very pleasant and helpful. The rooms were a bit small, but the bathroom had a cool style. We were upgraded to the superior room, which means we got a sitting area with a non-functioning fireplace. Very quaint. We could walk to the bridge, Circular Quay, the Opera House, etc. It was expensive, but the location and history was worth it. Good (but expensive) breakfast in the morning.

Unique Quality: The building was originally built by convicts as the first hospital.

A nice hotel but a bit too noisy and expensive

A nice hotel, but noisy for light sleepers. Late at night, patrons at the German restaurant down the street will keep you awake with drunken beer singing and the garbage trucks will wake you up early in the morning. Also, an expensive hotel based on the conditions above one must endure. Little value, but conveniently situated. Avoid the breakfast at the hotel as it is absurdly expensive--you can do much better at a nearby bakery. This hotel really needs to take the money that they have fleeced from its patrons and install some sound-proof windows.

Unique Quality: Rustic, location is good.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend any nice (and cheap) hotels in the Sydney CBD or near to it. Ive got a small budget ($100-$200 per night) with more expensive tastes!!

Thanks :-)

Hi

I would recommend that you check out web sites like wotif.com.au or needitnow.com.au or bestrates.com.au they have some nice hotels there and they are discounted when you wait and book closer to the date that you are leaving.

Try the Four Season - if the $ you queries are USD - I stayed there and with some negotiation I was given a rate of USD 185 per night. Hotel is in the CBD very close to the Circular Quay with views to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera.

You could try a B&B. Their are some good ones near Sydney centre. Try Tripadvisor.com Click on Sydney Hotels and their B&B Section comes up as well.
One I've heard good reports of through friends staying there is www.ardmorehouse.com.au
They do a really good breakfast and it is in Newtown very close to the CBD by public transport, about 15 mins by train to the Opera House.

Go to www.accorhotels.com.au & on the right at the top you'll find the "hot deals" link. Using it you'll find the Formule1 at Kings Cross is offering rooms at $79 (Australian) per night with views of the harbour. Now I don't know if those views are from all rooms or from some other part of the hotel. I do know that Formule is the cheapest in the different ones of the Accor range so there aren't too many extras. e.g no pool, spa etc. It's apparently close to Kings Cross station so a couple of minutes train ride into the city. Mind you it's probably only a 15 minute walk into the city from there.

Also check out www.harbourrocks.com.au as it is right in The Rocks in a gr8 location, but a lot more expensive. I had a squiz at their website & saw the cheapest room rate they had currently was $252 (Australian so about US$190 approx.).

Best of luck with your travel arrangements,
Doug

Oops, that Harbour Rocks Hotel cheapest room rate I saw was $215 Australian so about $US 160. There that sounds a bit better for a gr8 location. Don't think it has any harbour views, but it's only a 2 minute walk (or less) & you are right at the Harbour at Circular Quay with an excellent view of the Bridge on your left & the Opera House on your right with Sydney Cove in between & more harbour stretching out in front of you.
