I suggest my home town of Terrigal, an hour's drive north of Sydney on the Central Coast. Great beach, plenty of nearby places to see, plenty of cafes & restaurants etc. Details of Terrigal and accommodation on my pages here on VT.

We always like the area The Entrance, you can have the choice of beach and lake, and there is plenty to do. Its only 2hrs or less away from Sydney.

We have just had a 3 day stay at Bawley Point, which is about a 3.5-4hr drive south of Sydney. We stayed at Bawley Homestead, which was just perfect. They have 4 guest rooms, serve the most amazing breakfasts, and the property is surrounded by gardens and trees. Birdlife is prolific, and kangaroos on the lawns watch you while you have breakfast.
The beach is only minutes away by car, or a 10 minute walk through a lovely forest.
The rooms are cosy and furnished with antiques. Our room had a double bed, and a single bed tucked into an alcove (ideal for your grandson)
The hosts are wonderfully hospitable.
There are other beaches nearby-Ulladulla and Batemans bay- all about 20 min drive.

here is the website for the Bawley Homestead:

I'm with Colin & Hannah. Both Terrigal & The Entrance are on the Central Coast north of Sydney and both are good. Terrigal would probably have more nicer accommodation but The Entrance has the nice inlet and markets there. Either way, you couldn't go wrong.

Travel Tips for Sydney

New Year in Sydney

by maryamy

As one of the first big cities each year to celebrate the coming of the new A.D. year, Sydney puts on a wonderful show.
This event at the height of summer draws thousands to the city and is done with style.
There is first a kids' fireworks at 9 p.m. then the adults' treat comes at midnight. It is amazing and thoroughly recommended if life send you that way.

City of Sydney Library Card

by M0B1US

The library is one of the most valuable resources you can have when you're living for a while overseas, as when you're travelling around the world the last thing you want is to buy books or magazines as you can't take them with you.

The main Town Hall library in the centre of town has a good collection (even better when you realise most of the good stuff is out and must be reserved!) of the standard fare and for a while I went on a mini reading blitz!

Apart from novels, I found the two best things were the giant travel section, where we were able borrow NSW and Victoria books for our mini road trip, and to plan our SE Asia using the in depth country books before buying a SE Asia book.

As long as you live inside the inner city, you can get membership for free - outside and it's AU$10, or you get a membership with whichever suburb you're living in...

Hop on a Ferry

by seagoingJLW

Hop on a ferry to Manly Beach. Or take another ferry to the zoo.

Ferry service is operated by State Transit under the name Sydney Ferries. There are three categories of ferries:
1. Inner Harbour Ferries- west to Meadowbank and north to areas such as Mosman.
2. Manly Ferries and Jetcats- from Circular Quay to Manly.
3. Rivercats and Supercats- west to Parramatta.

BYO!!! (Bring your own)

by sabrina_florida

If you're going to somebody's house they will probably tell you BYO. So you should know this means that you have to take something to drink. Of course buy something to share, don't take just a beer for you alone!

Packing List

by margaretvn

Good strong walking shoes or boots if you plan to hike or walk in the mountains.
A sun hat is very necessary and something to cover up in the sun as it gets very hot in the bush. Buy your sun protection in Australia, there is so much choice and they have higher protection factors there.
