Surfing in Bondi Beach

by Kristini

Hello! I hear that surfing is one of the must do things in Australia. Some friends and I are going to Bondi Beach Sydney and would like to take a lesson on surfing. I've been looking up places online and Let's Go Surfing seems to be a great place to start because they've got a website where we can sign up. I'm wondering if you know of any other good surfing shops that do lessons in Bondi that may not have a website and if its possible to just figure it out when we get there and still be able to get lessons without reservations.

Thanks!

Bondi is chokka with surf shops- you will have NO problems whatsoever finding somewhere that gives surfing lessons. An even better surfing beach is Manly, on the Northern Beaches.

I would have to agree with Lynn

head to manly, the ferry ride is worth the trip alone and then you can check this place out

As my teen years were in Noosa north of Brisbane I learnt to surf then and have no experience with surf schools at all but a friend went and had a great time

Enjoy your trip

Travel Tips for Sydney

Life Is A Beach

by shellseeker

Manly Beach - I went to Manly 2 times on my last stay in Sydney and I enjoyed it always very much. Already the ferry crossing of the harbour is worth the effort... always unbelievably beautiful. The beach might be a bit crowded but just head down on the left side and it gets better!

Manly Beach

by linnyloo

Manly Beach is one of the best beaches in the Sydney area.
Manly is located on a narrow peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water, it offers both harbour and ocean beaches.
Manly is a wonderful blend of casual and trendy tastes. It remains the more easygoing of the beaches that line the north coast.
The plaza offers shopping and a large variety of places to eat and drink.
On weekends and public holidays an outdoor Arts and Craft Market is held in Sydney Road close to the promenade. Visitors will find an abundance of hand-crafted items here.
A walk down Manly’s promenade brings one to a breath taking ocean view. The white sands, the surf, the huge Norfolk Pines lining the beach are part of what is so distinctive about Manly.

Manly can be reach by many different forms of transport including the Manly Ferries from Circular Quay, which is a really nice scenic half hour trip.

We found this man who creates the most incredible sand castles absolutely facinating. He had a book with other castles he has made, often taking the whole day to make it. People give him money for it.

Chinatown

Dixon Street. That's where it's at but, having said that, you can go a few blocks either way and still be where it's at.
Dixon Street has the advantage of being sealed off from traffic so it has a better atmosphere but that doesn't mean you should restrict your eating to the mall. No indeed, with so many Asian restaurants to choose from you could literally stay there for a year, eat at a different one twice a week and still miss many.
Situated at the southern end of Sydney's CBD, Chinatown also encompasses Paddy's Markets, a ramshackle two storey brick affair where markets are still held daily.
Darling Harbour, The Entertainment Centre and many other attractions may be close by but you are a world away from anything else Sydney may have to offer when you stroll through Chinatown. There's a sign at the entrance to Dixon Street, "Within the four seas, all men are brothers". Watching the ever flowing tide of humanity between restaurant walls you can almost believe it's true.
When it comes to food, seeing things hanging on horizontal metal rods or lying in trays in the shop front window that you may not previously have ever seen on a menu or a fork can be disconcerting to some. Me, I take it as a challenge. Pass the goat meat, savage the quail, ignore mentions of cats and dogs - I'm there for the epicurean delights on offer.

gay & lesbian mardi gras

by willy_wonka

every year in the first weekend of march, the gay and lesbian mardi gras hits sydney in a big way! over 500,000 people pack the streets to watch the colorful parade of people celebrating their sexuality. it's a huge flurry of costumes, color and elaborate displays, also with many important messages, esp. those of respect and tolerance. it was such a great night, i made friends with some dutch girls, some french tourists and a british couple. everyone was outdoors on this beautiful balmy night enjoying the parade and being HAPPY!

the whole month leading up to the mardi gras is the gay & lesbian cultural month. there are numerous things going on in sydney, from gay theatre performance, to conventions, to film nights. you can grab a copy of the official G&L mardi gras handbook for free leading up to the event, for a full listing of the numerous events on offer.

please check out the travelogue to see more drunken dodgy photo moments from the mardi gras!
