How long will you be in Sydney.
Do you intend to drive to other areas?
More info about your plans would be helpful
If you are staying in Sydney- I recommend that you use public transport:
Buses\trains/ferries are cheap and readily available-
Traffic is insane in Sydney, it would drive you crazy.
To get to scenic areas around Sydney, there are day tours available/

Hi , thanks for your reply. We are off to Coffs Harbour then a house sit in Brisbane then to the Noosa area, departing from Sydney.
We travel re Servas and really need wheels. My Husband also carts around his extra appendage, Madame Guitar!! So much fun to entertain as we traipse around. Looking for a good used car but it doesn't have to look mint as long as it has been mechanically maintained.

Well...........as long as you are aware of the vast distances involved driving in Australia-
You could pick up a car from ABOUT a$5000-6000. Cheaper models would be unreliable for long distances in my opinion.
Don't think that you would have a probem re-selling.

I would go to a new car dealer who also sells second hand cars with a warranty. Purchase one in your price range, over $5000 should get you one that won't break down every five minutes. They may also entertain the idea of buying it back when you are leaving.

Yes there are car dealers who have set themselves up as a "back packer" dealer so they will sell with an agreed buy back price. You could also try Tradingpost or Carpoint. Perhaps even ebay.
Travel Tips for Sydney
Quiet NSW south Coast
by NSWP
Hi, we live at Batemans Bay, about 4 hour drive south of Sydney. If you have time well worth a drive down the south Coast, visiting Kiama, Jervis Bay, Ulladulla, Mollymook and Batemens Bay, unspoilt, no high rise.
Cheers, enjoy your trip.
Hunter Valley - especially...

Hunter Valley - especially you're a wine lover. (don't drive your own car if you not only want to taste but drink)
Blue Mountains - Not quite far away from the city but it gives you a very stunning landscape.
The Rocks - one of the best conservation works in the world.

Australian Prawns
by ATXtraveler
One of the most common phrases about Australia heard in the US is the term, "Throw another Shrimp on the Barbie"... coined by the Paul Hogan film, "Crocodile Dundee".
The fact of the matter is, if you are looking for a Barbie - meaning Barbecue Grill in Australia, and you find one, it will in fact never have shrimp on it. They are prawns here in Australia, and prawns are quite sizeably bigger than a shrimp.
If you show up to an Australian barbecue, and yell out... "Hey Mate, Thrown another PRAWN on the Barbie", you are assured to still get a funny look, but you will not go hungry!
Town Hall
by CandS
Here is the Town Hall in the CBD of Sydney. It is probably not as nice as most town halls but it is a fairly impressive building... I had walked past it quite a few times before without even noticing what it was...
Street Performers
by cjg1
As in most cities; you will find street performers. In Sydney there were several costumed performers at various tourist sites; Darling Harbour, Circular Quay, etc. Take a picture if you must but remember to throw some cash their way for their trouble.
