hey guys

by jennahay1986

Im from scotland and am planning on heading to sydney next year for about 3 months. I have found accomodation in a hostel near bondi, but was wondering how much cash i should have for the 3 months incase i cant find work, need food and things like that.
I have travelled alone before but never to this far away.
Also, what is it like in winter over there as i know it would be a little quieter?
Would be a great help if sumone can answer this for me.

cheers
x

Hello.
I'm sure that you will love Sydney. Our winters are really quite mild, especially compared to Scotland. Low usually about 12 deg celsius, high 19-20 deg. It can of course vary somewhat, but very pleasant anyway.
I must stress that Sydney is not the cheapest city to visit. It can be a problem forsome. But if you plan wisely, and live in hostel, you could easily get by with A$150-200 per week (excluding accommodation).
There are so many things that you could see for free- beaches, parks and even just walking the city and environs is a treat.Public transport is good, and cheap.Food you could buy yourself and cook,if the hostel has a kitchen. This would save a lot, because restuarants can be expensive. I suggest that you read some VT pages about Sydney. There are some good ones. And please feel free to email me if you have any specific questions.

HI there,

As lynne has said there is a lot to do in Sydney that is free and if you are under 30 and plan now you can organise a working visa and get one of the many jobs in hospitality that are always floating around.

To live in Sydney with out an income and get away to some of the other areas on the east coast, you will need atleast AUD 4000 for the three months. Personally for that long I would plan on about AUD 4500 to 5000 and then yuo will not be stressing towards the end of your stay.

I no longer live in sydney but have previously so if you have any specific questions feel free to e-mail me.

Hope this helps

Travel Tips for Sydney

Sydney, much more than an Opera House

by zgriffin

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge! There is a bridge climbing company with very reasonable prices located at the base of bridge on the Opera House side. Call in advance to make a reservation and purchase tickets. I have done both a day and a night climb and they both have pluses. Go during the day when you first arrive in Sydney to acclimate yourself to the city, and then do a night climb to see all the lights. I miss the Royal Botanical Gardens that are adjacent the Syndey Opera House. The gardens are perfect for walking around to enjoy a beautiful day or for laying out to soak up the sun. Definitely a must see/do.

Visit one of the Beaches!...

by KiwiDi

Visit one of the Beaches! Manly - take a 1/2 hour ferry from Circular Quay, the ride there is half the fun, you get a great view of the harbour on the way. A long beautiful beach with lots of restaurants and markets on the weekend.
Bondi - (pictured) A bus ride from the CBD, I love this beach! Even if you dont want to swim or put your feet in the sand (but surely you couldnt resist?!)... this area was renovated for the Olympics and year 2000... very groovy area, great cafes, bars and people watching!

The famous Watson's Bay Hotel and The Gap

by SydneyGal

Hang out in the beer garden of the Watsons Bay Hotel on a sunny weekend. This place gets packed. WHY? the atmosphere is fantastic, it is a great place to eat fish and chips/seafood/BBQ steaks with a beer/wine with friends, against postcard views of Sydney Harbour. You cannot beat that combination! TIPS: parking is a nightmare on weekends. So perhaps catch the ferry over from Circular Quay. Arrive there before lunch in order to get a table with the best vantage point over the water. And after you finish eating, take a walk (5 mins away) to 'The Gap', which has panoramic views over Sydney. A word of warning: You could get caught around here for hours!

A Burger With 'The Works'

by Bwana_Brown

That early morning burger that we had on our way north toward Newcastle (see Hotels) was our first experience of what it means to order a hamburger with 'The Works' when in Aussie. In this particular case, the hamburger comes sandwiched with a fried egg and a slice of beet. Talk about delicious - it was tasty!

Packing List

by jrs1234

An umbrella - although the weather is generally great in Sydney, when it rains, it can really rain! It can still be warm at the same time, even in winter, though so an umbrella is usually better than a raincoat.
