Second-hand travel books in Sydney?

by koiruli

Hi, we are going to Sydney at the end of February and need to look for some travel guide books for our next destinations (Tasmania, New Zealand, Samoa and Tonga.) Are there any shops in Sydney where we could find secondhand travel books, like Lonely Planet or Rough Guides? Googling gave us only shops that sell new books.

Hi,

you could try some of the following, but you will find many second hand shops - op shops - also have books, I have often found guides in these rather than searching for book shops. Sydney is a big city - the phone book will have a section for used books - you can try that when you get here.

Ashwoods, 129 York Street Sydney.
Booked Out,37 St Pauls'Street Randwick
Elizabeths: 343 Pitt Street, Sydney 2000 & 197 King St, Newtown
George Street Book and Record Exchange, 01 George Street, Sydney 2000

Can't think of others at the moment - but don't sweat too much - you will find lots of books.

You will find an excellent selection at Gleebooks (2nd hand store)
address:
191 Glebe Pt Rd
Glebe - phone number 9552 2526

Glebe is a funky suburb just a few minutes from CBD by bus.

Also in Glebe is Sappho Books- they have a huge selection of 2nd hand travel guides and books- (also on Glebe Point Road.)

In Glebe Point Road there are two - Sapphos and Glebebooks. There are two Glebeooks - one for new and one for used.

Try googling Second Hand Books Sydney - I did that once and found a big list.

Thank you everyone, your replies are very helpful and much appreciated. Seems we'll have plenty more choice of bookshops in Sydney than we thought.

Travel Tips for Sydney

Gay Mardigras Parade

by MadKiwiBeast

Held about the first week of March I think, you should really try not to miss this. From memory there is all sorts of cultural events for about a month leading up to the parade as well. Really interesting. Cable waterskiing (check my sports travel tip), the mardigras and long hot evenings at the beach eating good food.

Australia's National Flag

by ATXtraveler

One of the things you may notice when you get to Sydney is the Australian National Flag. It has a few unique facts, like that it is the only flag to fly over an entire continent. Also, this flag is the only one not to contain the Country's National Colours (Green and Gold).

The Australian flag contains a Union Jack (National flag of Great Britian) in the upper left hand corner, and then contains the Southern Cross as well.

For more information on the symbols of Australia, check out the Australian National Website:

When to visit Sydney

by Venturingnow

I would have to vote for the shoulder season. This is my prime travel season and it refers to the "shoulder" of tourist action. You've got the holiday travelers that are in Sydney in December, then you've to the Easter crowd in April, you're goal is to get in between those two, that way, you'd get the sun to go to the beach, and less crowds to deal with.

Tipping

by Gypsystravels

Tipping is not expected in most places in Sydney, especially after a meal. But if you feel the service was good and you would like to leave a tip, 10% is the guideline you should use.

This tipping practice also applies to taxis and the easiest way to tip them is by rounding off the amount, i.e. a fare of $23.50 I would round to $25.

Comfortable Clothing

by Marpessa

Take a small backpack, bottle of water and a snack and then hit the streets for some serious sightseeing. Wear comfortable shoes, as the best way to see Sydney is to do a lot of walking. Pants, top and a jacket, should be right for any time of year.
