Cheap Eats
by llauraa
You wont have much of a problem finding lunch for $15 or less around that area. You can skip the restaurants and go to the cafes and take-aways around there. As another poster on here said, you are in a CBD area and as such there is a large work force to be fed. If you are on Kent, walk up to the Westpac plaza just at the west end of Wynyard( ask for directions ) and there is a massive food court under there you can take you pick. Not sure what you mean by 'american' food unless you mean MacDonalds & other chains? these are everywhere.
For dinner I second the previous mention of pubs. Most pubs have their menus on the blackboards or display befre you go in, and just about all of them have something to eat between $15-20. You could get a decent pizza and/or burger for under $15. Also - on Sussex Street ( one street west from Kent) go to the Shelbourne Hotel on Thuesdays - they used to have the $7 dollar steaks. Not sure if they still do but you could google them and find out
If you are willing to splurge $22 and like seafood there is the All you Can Eat Mussells night at Bungalow 8, King St Wharf, Darling Harbour - also on a Tuesday night. Highly recommend it - but must book in advance as its extremely popular.

A Virtual Tour of Sydney

Check out this website for some views of Sydney, the city centre, the old part of the city, the harbour and surrounds.
It gives a good idea of how it really looks, and you can make your own judgement.
One thing I can really recommend (that is shown on this virtual tour) is the Rocks Markets held on weekends. Great fun and very Sydney-fied.
Heres the link:

Hunter Valley - For lovers of wine
by SydneyGal
If you enjoy wine and wine tasting, take 1-2 days and explore the numerous wineries in the Hunter Valley. A mere two hour drive north west of Sydney, this wine region is known for its good Shiraz.
TIPS: Some highlight wineries to visit: Brokenwood, Peppertree, Robertsons. For a special meal, try Roberts restaurant (located on the Peppertree wine estate).
If you are a backpacker in need of some extra cash, you could get a job grape picking here. More info and accommodation: http://www.winecountry.com.au/home.htm

BYO = Bring your own... you often see this written on restaurant signs and in ads... Also if you are invited to a party unless you are told otherwise you should take your own alcohol... if its a dinner take a bottle of wine for the host.
