Hotel in Sydney - Ideally Manly

by Nov_star

Hi all,

I'm returning to Sydney for a week next February. I lived there, in Darling Harbour for 1 wonderful (amazing) year, 7 years ago. Now that I'll be returning as a tourist, I'm looking for a good-value hotel (budget ca. USD$120 / night). Ideally in the city centre or Manly. Any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Nov*

Hi
Accomodation will be cheaper in Manly- or at least better value , than in city centre.
Have a look at the Manly accommodation link below. It is quite comprehensive.(copy & paste the link)

check out a site called wotif.com - discount prices on some very good hotels for booking 20 days (or so - can't remember exactly) in advance

i know you are not coming until FEb but see what sort of thing is available

i have used it a lot and got some good hotels at good prices

you can check them out by location

We've returned today from a 5 night stay in Syd and stayed at the Harbourview Hotel in North Sydney. Although more expensive than you say, the view from our room was AMAZING. See my Sydney page for a night time shot from our room. North Sydney rail station under the building, shopping centre with supermarket across the road and the best value meal I've come across at the Station Hotel also across the road - $12 for steak/chips and similar. By train from the North Syd rail station its about 5 minutes to Town Hall, or with another train a few minutes later at Circular Quay, the ferries, the Rocks etc.

See www.viewhotels.com.au and I found by booking direct (via e mail) it was cheaper than wotif.com (BTW wotif.com now takes bookings up to 3 months)

Hi, 3 years ago we stayed at the Quest Apartments directly opposite the Manly Ferry Terminal, excellent modern 1 bed apartment. We received a good deal over the internet, as you will be there in Feb after the school holidays you might be able to jag a deal.

Pity the value of the US $ has fallen against the Aussie dollar' Photos on my Manly page.

Travel Tips for Sydney

A modern city aside the Harbour

by leffe3

To get a real feel for the centre of Sydney, head for the Botanical Gardens at the Harbour shoreline. From here you will not only get fantastic views of those 2 Sydney icons side-by-side (try and go in the morning when the sun is behind you and you get the best light for photos), but also the CBD skyline. Both this photo and the photo for the next tip are taken from the same spot, slightly different angle! (in fact its the same water taxi -:))

Wildlife in Sydney

by Canadienne

While many of the birds that seemed to populate the city were common to Sydney-ites, it was new and unusual for me to see them wandering around like pigeons. What is considered a pest in one place. . .is worth a fortune in another.

Kings Cross

by Sajt

If you like girls, night clubs, or you just want to use cheap internet you deffenetly have to go this place. You will enjoy that. You can use the Internet for $3AUD unlimited. The connection is fast. The place is a little bit scarry, but know worry. Don't give an attencion for the people on the streets, and you will have no problem.

Eat Pie - An Aussie Tradition?

by weewatty

When in Rome et al. When in Australia it seems to be that a pie on the move is the norm.

The best I sampled was from Shakespeare's Pie Shop, located in the Corso, Manly(they have other outlets) For a pretty reasonable price you get a hefty pie with some magic fillings, my personal fav being Thai Chicken, it was sublime, especially to round off a heavy nights boozing. I remember hefty chunks of chicken breast oozing out in a tasty sweet thai chilli sauce. They even have a Pie of the Week, usually coming with some bizarre filling.

Please Note: This is a tradition where you should'nt really worry about the number of calories involed.

Casual

by Ramonq

This is a very casual city. If you're not on business travel, pack neat casual clothes with you. Shorts can be worn on the streets and pubs, but some upmarket areas or clubs do not tolerate them.
