by RKH88

Did anyone know of or have stay with the Waldorf apartments in South Sydney?
Please let me know of your comments.

Or suggest any others serviced apartments with a reasonable price and good location within city.

We will be in Sydney around Oct 19 to 25.

Any help is much appreciated.

Annam Apartments in Potts Point or The Wyndham Vacation Resort Asia Pacific in South Sydney. Having tried a number of self catering options in Sydney, these 2 stand out. They're both bookable through VT site, but should also try wotif.com

Travel Tips for Sydney

The Bigger Picture Exhibition

by SWFC_Fan

The Bigger Picture Exhibition was an exhibition of 29 photographs on display in Sydney's Hyde Park at the time of my visit in April 2006.

I have built this as a "General" tip rather than a "Things To Do" tip, since the exhibition was only a temporary one, running from 8th - 24th April 2006. However, it is likely that other exhibitions will be displayed in the park in future.

This selection of spectacular images was displayed in two rows along the central path of Hyde Park, between the War Memorial and the Archibald Fountain.

I spent an afternoon reading the accompanying text explaining the significance of each photograph. Many of the photographs were of events in Australia, though a few of them were of international events.

The impressive shots included:

- cricketers continuing their game against the backdrop of raging bush fires;

- trams in Sydney's Railway Square in 1935;

- a high diver in the 1938 Empire games (a forerunner to the Commonwealth Games) against a backdrop of Sydney Harbour Bridge;

- a couple of African meerkats warming themselves up by a heatlamp (giving artificial sunlight) at Sydney's Taronga Zoo;

- kangaroos escaping from an approaching bush fire;

- a lone voter at a remote polling station in the Outback.

An absolute must is the Harbour Bridge climb - even for those who are not good with heights.
Darling Harbour is superb, bustling with activity. I could sit there people-watching all day. There are lots of v good restaurants.
A trip on a harbour ferry to Manly etc is a relaxing way of seeing the area. We then did a 5day cruise from Mackay around the Whitsunday islands and to the G B Reef. (Reef disappointing).
After that we drove up to Port Douglas via Undara Lave Tubes where we stayed in v old railway carriages amongst many kangaroos.Port Douglas quiet - excellent food down at the harbour(bucket of prawns (and wine) at dusk)

Visit the port and take a boat trip. You can get boat trips to other places near Sydney and I chose a place at randum and had a good day out. But you also get some spectacular views of the Opera House and Harbour bridge.

Sightsee, Stay, Shop or Dine at The Rocks....

Incidentally, did you know that The Rocks is the site of the first European settlement in Australia? It was once a neglected area of convict-built stone buildings. Today, it is Sydney's most historic and most happening place.

Noticed the tall buildings in the background??

Well, that's Sydney's Business District. For those tourists who detest walking long distances (or even those who have absolutely no stamina at all to walk!), you'd be most ecstatic to know that ALL major sights here in Sydney is within walking distance. Lovely, isn't it?

by emerald125

It is not necessary to tip in Sydney. People however often do tip waiters or taxi drivers and hotel staff for good or thoughtful service usually 10% for a food bill and with a taxi fare often just up to the nearest $.
Australian's say please and thank you when talking to retail staff...
