More in sorrow than in anger

The woman who ran this place in 2007 when I stayed one night was very pleasant indeed so I don't want to be mean but I must tell the truth.
The location was good - just off the main drag (but a 10 minute walk from the station) and maybe I got the worst room in the place - but oh dear it wasn't pleasant.
My room had a seedy bathroom annexe at the window end so the room was dark and dingy. The furniture was due to be burnt. The guttering outside my room leaked and the floorboards of the upstairs verandah were rotting.
The hostel wasn't clean. It had gone beyond shabby (which I don't mind) and was rapidly passing dingy and heading towards squalor.
I saw no imminent signs of renovation - but one hopes they have lifted their game. I really wouldn't stay here again unless they had. And I'm not fussy.
I could hear other people in the rooms but I never saw anyone else. A feeling of hopelessness pervaded this place. It was gloomy.
