Advice on Transport!
by laash
Hello!
My friend and I will be traveling to Airlie Beach in January to go on a sailing trip. We return to Airlie Beach on a Tuesday at 4:30pm. Our flight is that same night from Prosperine Airport at 6:50pm. Does anyone know the best way to get back to the airport from the city?? Thank you!

There is a bus service available.
Have a look at the website

I agree with the above reply---but have you asked the sailing trip people if they have a curtesy car available--a lot of them do if you are sailing with them for a few days.I would check this out.

You will not have enough time to get to Properpine Airport - the bus is not frequent - and the 5.25pm bus will not get you to Propserpine in time - it takes about 45 minutes - to catch your flight. You will be able to find the bus timetables on line - this is just from memory...
Options will be courtesy car - but if you have not booked this with the trip it may be hard to arrange. I think your only option is going to be a taxi.

I don't know of any of the sailing companies that pick people up and drop people back to Proserpine but there are maxi taxis that do runs out to the airport and they cost $15 per person. There is a phone at the marina that you can use to book one of the taxi's. They can pick you up from various locations.
Travel Tips for Airlie Beach
Storage Lockers
by betska
This is a great idea if you are a long-term traveller or backpacker, travelling to some of the islands, and you don't want or need to take all of your stuff.
Small lockers cost A$4 for 24 hrs
Large lockers cost A$6 for 24 hrs
You can only use $2 coins. They also provide long-stay envelopes for extended stays. So if you are leaving Airlie Beach for over 24 hrs, you can pay for the first 24hrs using coins, and then put the balance of your payment in an envelope, with your name, locker number, payment period and cash enclosed noted in the envelope. You place this in their safe. There is a space for you to put your contact number/name of boat etc. as well.
This might also be convenient for storing personal items of value if you are staying in backpacker dorms.
Location is on Shute Harbour Road, near the corner of the Esplanade
Whitehaven Beach
by CandS
Whitehaven Beach is a very famous and beautiful beach. It is 6 kms of pure white silica sand.
For the best view of Whitehaven Beach you should do the walk from Tongue Bay to the lookout but it is also nice to spend some time on the beach too. From the lookout we got a fantastic view of the beach and Hill Inlet - it was low tide so we got to see all of the sandbars and it was beautiful!
We spent one night anchored at Whitehaven and spent a lot of time on the beach. :)
My Birthday Party Celebrated in Oz
by cnango
I was surprised & delighted on my birthday with not just one but 2 Birthday cakes. Well fair enough since when it was the Anniversary of 9-11 back in the USA it was my birthday in OZ. Of course I decided to celebrate the next day as well since it was my birthday in the USA ! HAHAHA any excuse to party!!
VTers have Fun in the Sun at Whitehaven Beach
by cnango
Whitehaven Beach is such a gorgeous pristine beach. It is part of a National park and is vast in size. As a native of Southern California it was completely mind boggling for me to see so much unspoiled and undeveloped coastline. The beach is world class with its warm, clean turquoise blue water and soft white sand, which looked and felt like powdered sugar. After swimming VTers proceeded to play Aussie games, goof around or just lay out on the beach.
Beware of the cockroaches
by northeast80
I must say I wasn't impressed with Airlie Beach at all, my hostel was expensive, there was no hot water and it had cockroaches (this was Koalas, I only stayed here because I knew other people there).
I didn't like the man-made tiny beach, it was full of tourist tat shops and backpackers bars.
Saying that we all come here for one reason don't we? The magnificant Whitsundays.
