Visiting Airlie Beach in Sept

by kittymoo

I was wondering if September was a good time to visit Airlie Beach. I'm worried it will be too cold to swim/snorkel, and my main reason for going is to see some of the Great Barrier Reef. Thanks!

Well, I happen to know this is the month chosen by many locals to have a VT meet just there - Airlie. The meet is posted in the meetings section, link towards the right/bottom of the VT front page.

So, not based on experience but on this local selection, I would say it will be great time to visit. Check out the VT meet page!

Hi,I live in the far north of QLD and will be attending the Airlie Beach meet in Sept.It will be 10th to the 13th and the weather is usually great this time of the year. The water is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, diving.
Most people come here that time of the year to escape the southern winter.Be aware that a week after the vt meet school holidays start and Airlie will be crowded.
Check in the vt meets for info-- it would be nice if you could join us.

Well......its now mid-winter in Australia- and we have just returned from the Barrier Reef. The weather was sublime. 29 deg. The sea temp was 25 deg. Queensland has tropical weather, and the sea is always comfortably warm. September will be a perfect time for a visit.

Depends on where you're from and what you're used to. Currently the sea temperature at Mackay (closest I could find figures for) is 22C. Although September the weather will be starting to warm a little, the sea always lags so the water temp will be a bit lower.

as mentioned, depend on what you are used to. i think september is still not really summer weather, so water a bit cooler, but i was there this weekend, middle of july, and abeautiful day, and so many people out sumbaking on the beach. Like anywhere, weather changes, so a bit of luck will help. I think september will be wetsuit material for snorkelling, but totally bearable

September is the most popular time of year to visit the Whitsunday area including Airlie Beach. The locals say that winter only lasts two weeks and that has already come and gone. It is the end of the whale watching season so there will probably be a few still about but it is also the start of the marine stinger season so when you go snorkeling make sure that you wear a stinger suit. Everyone has them. Airlie Beach is a real party town with lots of backpackers and every night seems like a Friday night. Make sure that you take a trip out to the reef on a yacht or something. There are hundreds of choices at offices along the main street of Airlie Beach. The Sailing Club is a great place for a drink or a meal as is the new Oyster Bar Barrcudas which is located at Abel Point Marina, a 10 minute walk along the water from Airlie Beach. Have fun.

Travel Tips for Airlie Beach

by CandS

Temperatures in summer (December to February) are around 30*C down to about 24*C at night. In the winter months the temperatures are around 23*C during the day and down to about 17*C at night...

If you are thinking of visiting the Whitsundays I would recommend visiting somewhere between May and October when the weather is nicer and the stingers aren't in the water. The summer months can get too hot and uncomfortable...

by CandS

While in the Whitsundays make sure you go snorkelling somewhere around the islands or reef. We snorkelled around Whitsunday Island and Hook Island and saw some fantastic corals and fish!

I had never been snorkelling before but after a few minutes in waist deep water trying to get my breathing right, I was ready to go out to the coral... I never guessed it could be so beautiful underwater! I would totally recommend you give it a go!

Whitehaven Beach

by CandS

You really should make sure you visit Whitehaven is a 6 km stretch of pure white silica sand...very fine and soft... :)

There are plenty of tours available to visit Whitehaven Beach if you don't have a boat (or seaplane...haha) of your own. Tours leave from most islands and from the mainland...

Whitehaven Beach a boaters Paridise

by cnango

Whitehaven Beach is a boaters paradise or a "boaties" paradise as they say in OZ. We spent 2 days on 3 different boats. We went out on the Camira catamaran and took a buffet cruise on the Cruise Whitsundays boat to Knuckle Reef, and explored the reef from a glass bottom boat. We also saw many other types of boats along the way and anchored off shore on at Whitehaven Beach.

The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands

"It doesnt actually have a beach"

Airle beach is a lively place full of travellers getting drunk either before or after returning from a sailing trip.

Its similar to european resorts with one strip of a few bars and clubs, peopls out i the street, the usual stuff, nothing special really.

"The Witsunday Islands"

A trip round the islands is a must do for everyone, is possible its got to be a 3 day trip. Sail across the sea round the islands stopping off to swim, scuba dive, have lunch or relax. We headed off the islands for walks around to see the islands from a closer distance.

Whitehaven beach gets covered on so much salt from the sea that the sand is pure white, the sea cannbe warm but there is so much to see if you can get higher up on top of some of the islands, some have man made look out posts.

"After the sailing"

After three days on a boat you return to you hostel grab your stuff and then usually head to the bar to have drinks and a meal with the crew. This is a great night out and a lot of boats go out and come in on the same days so there are alsways people out.

Airlie beach is the town that doesnt sleep. Bars open till 6am and people going out on sailing trips around the same time.
