Sailing from Airlie to Whitsunday Island.
by Steve-H
The Lagoon, opened in early 2001, is a new feature between the main street and the sea, and allows year round swimming in a safe area, especially for families. This was partially funded by a $8 million contribution from the State government. Please note however that parking near the lagoon is on a Pay and Display system, and costs around $4 a day.
There is a proposal from the sailing club to develop a larger Port of Airlie marina in the Muddy Bay area. State funding of $2 million for the approval process has been granted in 2001. The nearby marina at Abel Point has also been expanded. We set out from Abel Point with Ivan Conway and Amanda to get get married on Whitdunday Island.
Day trips to resort islands, three day sailing trips for scuba divers and snorkellers, and bare boat charters leave from nearby Shute Harbour and the Abel Point Marina.
There are over a half dozen well known resort islands within easy reach of Airlie Beach. They range from the absolute luxury of Hayman Island (said to be one of the world's top ten resorts), through the bustle of Hamilton Island (largest resort in the South Pacific), from family resorts like South Molle, Club Med on Lindeman Island, Novotel's newly refurbished Daydream Island, several resorts on Long Island, and even a camping resort on Hook Island.

You have to go to the Whitsundays. most trips are 2 nights, 3 days around $150. You usually stay on 1/2 islands or even on the boat. food is included, bring your own drink. They provide snorkels and diving gear. All trips will visit the famous Whitehaven beach on Whitsunday island, with its crystal clear water and the finest white sand you will ever see.

Sail on Camira to Whitehaven.

A day out sailing the Whitsundays on board the catamaran Camira is an experience not to be missed. Especially when you get taken to the famous Whitehaven Beach!
This day trip with Cruise Whitsundays was a fantastic experience. The Camira departs from the Abel Point Marina daily at 8am and returns at 6 pm. All food including morning and afternoon tea plus a BBQ lunch are included.
We stopped at Daydream for some fun snorkling then sailed on to Whitehaven where we spent a good 1.5 - 2 hours. Once back on board the crew had whipped up an enormous feast. The BBQ included steak, fish, chicken and sausages plus a variety of salads. It was delicious!
Free coach transfers from local resorts are available.
Added to all that...free alcohol from 11am is also included in the price! What more could you want?
Cost is Adults...$165, children...$85, and families of 2 adults & 3 children...$460
Sailing The Islands

"The Solway Lass"
This trip was an effort to escape winter, Sydney and work for about a week. I can safely say that it was successful on all counts. The real downside was trying to get back to reality afterwards. Given that I really only had a few days off, I decided on spending the time on a sailing boat called the Solway Lass. This meant that there was no worry about food or accomodation - just had to get up there and back. (http://www.australiantallships.com/solwaylass.php)
The other good thing was that it meant spending most of the time from the best part of the islands. The only disapointing thing was the general lack of wind, which ment there wasn't that much time with the sails actually up. Still... have a look at the view from the front of the ship... then think - 25degC in the middle of winter :)
