Travel Tips for Atherton
Historic Church
by Kate-Me
Here we have a historic wooden church in a little town on the way to Atherton. The detailed brochure actually says that this is the most historic village in North Queensland, but when we got out of the car, the old buildings are far and few between, and there's not that much to see.
The few old buildings we did find though were nice, but they just didn't live up to the expectations of the glossy brochure.
Atherton Tableland - behind Cairns
by Myndo
Atherton-Tablelands, green soft flowing hills and many waterfalls.
The Landscape feels very familiar to me, like the Jura in Switzerland.
But the climate is a lot warmer, so the forests around here are more like Rainforests.
To see:
- Barron Falls (big, expressive)
- Milaa Milla Falls (like on a tropical island)
- Dinner Falls (the typical Waterfall)
- more: Zillie Falls, Ellinja Falls ..
- Mt Hypipamee Crater: a hole in the stone with a lake on the ground - the way to it goes through a forest, beware of the leeches here!
Atherton Tablelands
by Kate-Me
The Atherton Tablelands is approximately 1 hour's drive from Cairns, and within the region there is also the small town of Atherton.
The area is very pretty and the scenery ranges from open countryside, to rainforest, to small quaint towns and more.
Here, very close to the town of Atherton itself, we saw many beautiful trees such as this one with bright purple blossom, that we didn't see anywhere else in North Queensland.
