Guesthouse with warmth and history

For a change, I dumped the hostels for a guesthouse since all the hostels with ensuite seem to be located oh-so-unconveniently.

The guesthouse has been a guesthouse for 3 generations now. Annie and Jacob, the current and 3rd generation owners are a pair of affable grandparents-like owners who love chatting with their guests. The building does look its age and would really do better with some modern touches. It felt like I had fallen into a time warp and landed back in the 60s or 70s. The owners love to stack the hallways with knickknacks (such as dolls, which creepily, took on an eerie aura with the amber floor lights when the main fluorescent lights were switched off) but the walls are richly adorned with family photos and mismatched paintings.

My room was quite small and smell a little musty initially but it did came with a sink but no ensuite. (The shared bathroom was just across the hallway though, so I wasn't complaining) Pretty spartan but the bed was comfortable enough.

Simple breakfast came with the room - cereals, toast and jams with (instant) coffee/tea.

This is a family run quiet place - party seekers - go look elsewhere. It's lights out after 10pm though guests can return late with their room key, which also opens the main door.

Unique Quality: - Family touches. The owners are lovely and friendly.
- Free tea and coffee at all hours.
- Location is quiet but close to Central Train Station
- Credit cards accepted
- Bank (ANZ) next door
