campervan or car rental for travel around brisbane and up the coast

by bigslick1time

My wife and I are flying into Brisbane on Aug 4 for 8 days/nights. Want to see as much as we can within 300 or 400 kilometers of Brisbane...definately the coast areas and inland for special sights. Is the campervan a good option for just the two of us? or are we better off renting a small car and looking for low-cost accommodations? I have never done the campervan option before so I am a bit nervous about comfort and finding places to stay and being able to go where we want to go. How much would a campervan cost as opposed to renting a small car and staying in lower cost lodging that is clean and safe but not much more than somewhere to sleep at night?

It is a better idea (in my opinion) to rent a small car and stay in cheaper accommodation. There is plenty to choose from, motels and small country hotels will not cost more than A$70.00 per night (possibly less) - August is not high season. Brisbane has plenty of budget accommodation.
There is a possibility that you may find camping spots for the Campervan, but they will be far and few in between.

Within that radius I would rent a small car like a Hyundai Getz and use motel accomadation.

I agree, renting a normal sedan and staying in motels is the bettrer option. A sedan is cheaper to hire, uses less fuel, is easier and more comfortable to drive. Motels are good quality and not expensive, and at the end it will be about the same cost in total, maybe even less.

Hi, a small car would be better to park and drive - especially if you are not used to driving on the other side of the road.

Brisbane, brisbane, such a long-faced city, i'd rather see Zigong

I agree - stay away from the campervan. You have to take it everywhere with you and parking could be a problem. However most caravan parks have cabins with ensuite bathrooms and kitchens. Usually not very big, but good enough for two people on a nightly basis, they may be a bit cheaper than motels.

Travel Tips for Brisbane

Roma Street Parklands

by Kristina1701

I was bored, thinking I had already seen all of what Brisbane has to offer. Then someone recommended going to the Roma Street Parklands to me. I had noticed them on the city map but had never actually considered paying them a visit as I thought it would be just some normal, boring park. How wrong I was!!! I just loved the place! I liked it that much that I went there again the next day! There are thousands of beautiful flowers and trees, a lake and waterfall and the place is full of cute little geckos :-D
To get there you can either take a train and get off at Roma Street or walk there from the city. Go to the city hall and then walk straight on! (cross the road and pass by the church and then go straight on, up the hill)

Conrad Treasury

by beachboy

Conrad Treasury Casino provides visitors with the best in leisure and entertainment 24 hours a day. The casino is located within Brisbane Conrad Treasury Hotel. People say first timer always have virgin luck, but I've lost 6 games straight (AUD20) in my first visit to casino. Oh my!

Australia Day

by stevemt

Australia day (26th January every year) is a public holiday in Australia

It's a day when all Australians go wild, and get very patriotic.

Many wear Australian Shorts made out of the flag, Australian hats, wave flags, get temporary flag tattoo's and so it goes on

Many cars sport flags as well.

Barbie's (BBQ's), beer and the beach are the order of the day.

If you want a decent park or spot at the beach you need to get there by 8:30am, and if you need one of the public BBQ's, I would advise being there by 6:30am.

In Brisbane, one pub there, The Story Bridge Hotel, has their annual Cockroach races that are nationally famous.

Queenslander houses

by Kate-Me

Queenslander houses are often wooden, 2 storied, like the one pictured here, with hollow space underneath the house for parking and to allow circulation of air, because of the heat and humidity. In certain areas I'm sure it's also to try and avoid the worst of flooding in the wet season (more for Townsville and Cairns - not sure if this is ever a problem in Brisbane too).

Moreton Bay Whale Watching from Brisbane

by ASTIEL

Join your friendly and efficient Captain and crew for this exciting adventure with whales. To see these giants of the sea is an awe inspiring experience. Cruise into Moreton Bay. Possibly see turtles and stingrays as you seek out the mighty Humpback Whales.

They spy hop, slap their tails, show off with full breaches and to come across a pod of frisky humpback whales turns into a very special day out. Don't forget your camera, as if they are feeling playful, there are spectacular photo opportunities. A short stop at Tangalooma resort provides a look at this island paradise.

Whale watching skipper will explain the habits and characteristics of these gentle giants
A chance to visit the resort on Moreton Island
Enjoy a personal encounter with the worlds largest mammals as they travel on their migratory journey to and from the icy waters of the Antarctic

This tour is seasonal and only operates from 26 June, 2007 to October 31, 2007.
