The Holiday Inn Brisbane is situated right by Roma St station which is ideal for travel by train, particularly the Air Train.
The car park is a public car park so you have to pay but this is discounted from the normal price.
The room was a good size and clean. Very comfortable.
Reception were helpful and friendly.
Average is the only word I can find to describe everything! There is a grotty bus station next door although a short walk took you to most of the city centre and river etc.
My lasting memory of this hotel is not good however. Having travelled via Singapore from the UK we were really tired on arrival very early in the morning. So we could go straight to bed, I booked AND PAID for the previous night to save having to wait until 2pm for a bed! We arrived at around 8am only to be told by the reception "Oh, we have got you down as guests who failed to turn up.....we will have to see if there is another room you can have as yours is gone!" This was a bad start to the stay in Brisbane as you can imagine and we were found another room fairly quickly but I was not at all impressed with their attitude. They were quick enough to take payment for the previous night but also quick enough to write us off as failing to show up.....this is despite my travel agent sending them a note on the booking to explain why I booked the room for the previous night.
We stayed here in November when the whole town was busy ripping off England supporters during the Ashes tour. Accordingly, we had to pay the full rack rate and it was expensive. However, this is a convenient and well-run hotel with covered parking in the town centre. There is a parking charge but its pretty reasonable for a city centre.
Executive floor rooms were well equipped, spacious and modern with city views. Popular bar area and good restaurant. Free drinks in the bar early evening each Thursday.
For us, the location of this hotel was perfect. You can walk from the 2nd floor of the hotel straight in to the Roma St Transit station. So if you are catching a bus up or down the coast or the airport train then it couldn't be easier to get to.
We requested a high level room on both times we stayed and were given rooms on the 15th and 16th floor, away from the train/traffic noise and with good city views. No complaints at all about our room, it was modern, clean and spacious. They knew we were honeymooners and put a card and bottle of sparkling wine in our room on both stays (even when one was only 1 night).
Overall a great place to stay for a night or two if you are just having a short stopover in Brisbane and are looking for an inexpensive and convenient hotel. No complaints at all.
We had been staying in the Carlton Crest for a conference and thought that due to the cost, we'd move into something a little cheaper for the last couple of days. The Holiday Inn was cheaper than the Crest and the rooms were much larger and brighter.
Having read some of the reviews on this site, we requested a room on a high floor. We received one on 15th floor, overlooking the train station. You could hear the trains from our floor, but this wasn't an issue or a problem.
The hotel is ideally situated for anyone wanting to go on bus or train trips due to its location on Roma St station. Having been to the Gold Coast before, a number of trips actually leave from here. Although we didn't take any trips this time and used the two days to have a good look around Brisbane, it is definitely handy for travellers.
It's probably around a 10 minute walk to get into the central area (ie the Queen St arcade), and around 25 minutes across to the South Bank - so at least you get the opportunity to walk off your dinner on the way back! It's not a difficult walk though, so we didn't mind this at all.
We only stayed for 2 nights and didn't use any of the hotel's restaurant facilities. In addition, the gym is rather small and outdated compared to some hotels. There isn't a pool, but I'm guessing that most people don't go to Brisbane to sit around a hotel pool. All in all, it was ideal for a short stay and I'd definitely use it again.
Holiday Inn is right next to Roma Street Station (it is essentially on top of it). As Roma St is on the main city loop all city trains go through it. Therefore it made the Airport Train a great way to get there. It's almost right next to the exit doors.
The reception staff were very helpful me in at 11am, straight after I arrived. A room with double beds were provided, however as I wanted a queen bed I went back downstairs to see what they had available. I was first told there were no rooms, however the attendant kept checking and eventually found a room.
The room provided was on the top level and was an 'executive room', so I was delighted to obtain the free room upgrade. There was bottled water, fruit and chocolates in the room, and it was still a few hours before 2pm check in.
The room looked over the Roma Street Gardens (very pretty, worth a visit) and the rail yards. The rail yards make a little noise but this is really bearable unless you require absolute silence to sleep.
The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom looked as if it had been recently renovated. Everything was spotless and perfect.
Only problem was that the newspaper we had included in our room rate did not arrive on either of the two mornings I was there. I presume this was because of the room change. Fortunately the front desk was very obliging sending one up within a few minutes the first morning, and instructing me to take one from the rack the second morning when I checked out.
The spa, which is only stairs accessible from the 17th floor, is a perfect way to end the day. There is also an outdoor viewing area where you can see Brisbane. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk right into the centre of down or to South Bank as well. Although watch out generally in Brisbane as the cross city bus tunnel causes a lot of disruptions and noise currently.
Very friendly staff on reception and helpful concierge. Room 1404 was not as requested( double instead of twin). The view of the railway station was interesting but not so at 4.27am when the first train went through! Counting trains does not put you to sleep.The cracking noise from the windows as the sun came on to them was a bit disturbing, so much so that we requested a move, to which the reception staff responded immediately. Room 811 was as requested and the view over Roma Street and its traffic was a blessed relief. The Hotel provided excellent continental breakfast and the dinner on the two nights we used the restaurant was of a high standard.
The concierge staff were exremely helpful and managed to arrange the correct transport to the airport, something our travel company had completely botched.
The Transit Centre is part of the same building complex and as a result movement within the city and the use of the bus touring services is close to hand.
The decor is in need of a refurb but our experience of this hotel would encourage us to recommend it to any of our friends who may be in Brisbane.
If you stay here make sure you include a Thursday, the complimentary managers cocktail party is excellent as is the lunch "meal deal".
stayed at the holiday inn for a week in feb 07 as we have stayed before we knew what to expect, staff very friendly, spacious clean room, nice bathroom, daily newspaper, guest self laundry very handy, and the best of all the location, right next to the main transport hub roma street transit centre where most if not all tour buses depart great location for those wishing to do a lot of day trips or book transport to next destination also has a food court ideal for breakfast/snacks if you dont wish to eat in the hotel which in turn has a nice quiet little bar/restaurant which does a buffet breakfast a little overpriced tho, its only a 5 min walk from the hotel to the main shopping strip on queen street and a 10-15 min walk to southban the only down fall is that the hotel doesnt have a pool or sunloungers which wasnt really a big problem as we spent most of the day away from the hotel all in all it was a nice reasonable stay and would stay again
The Holiday Inn is a hotel chain and as such, you can typically count on some degree of sameness from stay to stay and place to place. The Brisbane Holiday Inn is in some ways, therefore, predictable. However, if you are visiting Brisbane for only a few days, as we were there for only 3 nights, it is the ideal location to go without a car. It is located directly adjacent to the main transit center for the city and a direct, non-stop train ride from the airport. The transit center has a number of convenient shops to pick up those things that we all need when we travel, and places to eat (I wouldn’t really call them restaurants). In my case, I had come down with an infection and also needed a doctor and pharmacy. There are both in the transit center. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Queen street mall, the Brisbane River, and the Roma Street Parklands are right next door.
The staff at the Holiday Inn is friendly and helpful, as you might expect, but the concierge was particularly outstanding. She made several recommendations and bookings for us that were all great. The ‘Australian’ meal she booked for us at Tukka was particularly interesting with game meats (kangaroo, emu, crocodile, and the like) all prepared in interesting/traditional ways. The Australian wine we had with the meal was the best we had the entire 5-week trip. Unfortunately, we have lost the name. Be sure to have Moreton Bay Bugs at Oxley’s.
Because the hotel is located right in the heart of the city, be sure to ask for a room on a high floor if you are sensitive to noise when you sleep. We were there over a weekend and the train and traffic noise were not noticeable/objectionable at all. Our room was a single but very large with a large bathroom that had just been redone. As I said earlier, it’s a Holiday Inn and as such, it was what we expected. We would stay there again and recommend it to friends.
We stayed in the Holiday inn for two nights at the end of our extended Australian vacation. The hotel was by some margin the cheapest hotel we stayed in during our holiday, but it did not disappoint and in many ways was on-par with some of its much more expensive competitors.
The plus sides were:
- We wanted a hotel close to the main transit centre; you can’t get any closer than directly above it!
- It was within walking distance of the main city centre shops and attractions.
- It was clean, tidy and comfortably furnished, with the rooms being unexpectedly larger than the norm.
- The reception staff were courteous and helpful, providing us quickly with information on day trips to Australia Zoo and checking on availability without prompting. (I don’t believe they were on commission as payment was made directly to the tour company on the day).
The down sides:
- There is some background noise from the railway, however we considered it to be no worse than general noise from any City Centre hotel.
- It can initially be a little confusing to find the entrance, although once you work out where the various entrances are you can quickly get to where you want.
- As a previous reviewer has stated, the creaking from the metal window frames as they expand and contract was more disturbing, due to its irregularity and vicinity.
In summary, if you are looking for a reasonably cheap, well located hotel for a few days stay in Brisbane, we would recommend you should at a minimum consider the Holiday Inn.
