The sky
The sky in Queensland seemed to be broader and higher than any sea level place I could recall. I believe the specialty of the sky above Brisbane is the light sky blue colour, which looks just about perfect, and the always clear atmosphere.

Some friends and I are coming to Brisbane next month on a cruise. Does anyone have any suggestions of a local tour company that does shore excursions for 12-15 people in a van. Also, how far is the shopping areas from the cruise pier? Thanks. Sue
The shopping areas of Brisbane Mall are not that far from the Cruise terminal. You could get Taxi, Bus or catch the city cat ferry from Bretts wharf at hamilton, just a short walk towards the city on kingsford smith drive, from the cruise terminal. You can easily walk around the city and be kept busy for the day. There is an information centre in the mall.
I agree with Deidre on transport to the city, but would probably lean more to the CityCat than the buses. You really don't need a tour company as Brisbane City Centre is very walkable and good for shopping. You could also walk across one of our pedestrian bridges to Southbank or the new modern art gallery. Then just get back on the City Cat and ride back to Brett's Wharf. It's a ten minute walk from Bretts Wharf straight ahead to Portside where your ship will be docked.
Yes, I agree, I think the city cat would be a really nice way to go into the city!
Thanks so much. Appreciate your info. Any suggestions on where the best place is to shop. I love local handicrafts or artwork by local artists. Happy Trails. Sue
If you are there on the weekend and Friday, for arts and crafts, the southbank markets are excellent, this is the website
http://www.southbankmarket.com.au/
also the riverside markets

Or the Riverside markets on Sunday. See my Brisbane page for tips in "Things to Do".
Probably any markets are good for arts and crafts, the brisbane mall for normal shopping and a taxi to nearby Toombul shopping mall for normal shopping.

This is a topic which has attracted a lot of discussion between myself and local friends over the years. Tipping is definitely not a cultural must here as it is in many other countries of the world. In Asia, I regard it as a polite acknowledgement of excellent service, but also a knowledge of limited pay to the staff member. In Australia, our restaurant staff are paid quite well. However, a tip of rule-of-thumb 10% of the bill is regarded as a polite indication of appreciation of a high quality service from your waitperson.
My daughter works in an inner city pub-restaurant, and makes a lot of money from tips. She works in a fair establishment, where case tips and allowed to be retained, and any credit card tips are honestly added to wages at the end of the pay period. However, just a note to those of you are might consider tipping in Brisbane, this may not be the norm, so, if it matters to you, ask.
It's the best Brissy weekend market for fruits, greens and morning tea while you stock up for the kitchen. It's only open on saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays, it functions as a wholesale market so it's basically offlimits except for the weekends. Entry is $1 per-person with unlimited entries for the day. Kids under 15 enter for free.
The variety of fruits beats those at Woolworths and Coles and so do the prices. So it's worth the $1 fee per person.
Location: Sherwood Road, Rocklea.
There are some fantastic areas by the river, just to get away from the madding crowds for a while :))
The river is not normally this color, it was churned up with heavy rains, just before I took this shot..
