Griffith - Nathan campus and suburbs + horse riding

by Pinkku

I'm about to move to Brisbane to study at Griffith uni (Nathan campus). I'd love to live in or close to the city but not sure which suburbs would be the best considering I'll be travelling to Nathan by bus daily. I've been looking for example West End and other suburbs close to the CBD but would like to get some advice from you who know the city better (I also wouldn't mind if there were some running tracks/parks/shops etc in the area).

Plus, if anyone knows about good horse riding places in/around Brisbane reachable by bus/train I'd be really thankful. At home I do horse riding nearly daily and I would like to keep doing it in Australia but after doing some reasearch I haven't really found much so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

I don't know what your budget is, but West End will be quite expensive, as would most places in close vicinity to the city.
Ignoring price considerations, West End holds the following benefits: lots of shops along Boundary Street (West End) and Little Stanley Street (South Bank), Coles at West End Markets, plenty of exercise opportunity along Riverside Drive and South Bank Parklands (jogging, cycling), volleybal and jogging at West End Park, train stations at South Brisbane and South Bank, Cultural Centre Busway, City Cats on the river, and nearby parks (Orleigh Park, South Bank, Roma Street).
Another area close to the city that may appeal to you would be New Farm Park.
You have lots of shops and night life along Brunswick Street towards Fortitude Valley, China Town in neighbouring suburb Fortitude valley, exercise opportunity (at New Farm Park, Merthyr Park and Newstead Park), City Cat transport, Brunswick Street train station.
In terms of horse riding, you've got the Riverside Equestrian Centre at 3666 Moggill Rd, Moggill, Windsong Equestrian Centre at 120 Eprapah Rd, Mount Cotton, Welcome Horse Riding at 136 Foggs Rd, Mt Samson, and Wattle Creek Riding School at 28 Kays Rd, The Gap.
Have a look on Google Street to see what the different areas look like.

Thanks alot! West End sounds like what I'm looking for and the prices for share accommodation don't seem to be too high.

I have had a look at the web sites of those riding places but they are all really expensive (I don't know if it's like that everywhere but here in Finland horse riding is alot cheaper). I have tried to find a horse to lease but it seems to be difficult close to the city (?).

Drive through the Bush

by cnango

Our Aussie American friend Luke did the driving, having learned to drive in Australia driving on the left hand side of the street was quite natural for him and a treat for us.His wife Mandy had a Aunt that lived in the bush outside of town. The first picture shows the bush clad dirt road leading to her house. The rest of the pictures were taken on route.

Is this a joke???

by Jerelis

It's maybe weird that were writing about this subject, but for us (Dutchies) it was quite an experience for us :-)

Of course we do understand what it means whenever we read "Mothers Room" at a sign, but making a picture with a real mother on it ... on her way to her own room is always nice.

Packing List

If you come here is summer, bring very light clothing, a good pair of walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a good shade hat. In winter, not much more than summer - A couple of pullovers and jeans or slacks. Winter is generally mild although prone to a really cold snap for a few days (really cold for us is around 10 degrees celcius) Can get as high as 40c in summer.

Newstead House. This is only...

by timtrina

Newstead House. This is only 2 minutes from where we live. It's a beautiful historic house dating back to 1846, with gorgeous gardens. It's open from Monday to Friday (10am to 4pm) and Sunday (2pm to 5pm). The cost is $ 4.40 for Adults and $ 2.20 for Children. It is apparently Brisbane's oldest dwelling. You can find it at Newstead Park (lovely place), Breakfast Creek Road, Newstead. When you've finished visiting the House, go across the road for a 'Brekky Creek Steak'. See 'Places to Eat'!
