Beach Paradise!
by Bwana_Brown
Visit the beaches -miles of them! We also enjoyed driving around the Cairns area, past sugar cane plantations and up into the hills surrounding the town. It was fun to explore Australia on our own and just to observe the different way of life! Photo of a beach near Cairns.
Port Douglas
by sue_stone
Located just one hours drive north of Cairns is my favourite town in the area, Port Douglas. Smaller than Cairns, Port Douglas has a real community feel about it. Yes, it has 5 star resorts, but doesn't has that tourist vibe like Cairns has (well, in my opinion anyway!).
The drive up to Port Douglas is stunning - the narrow highway hugs the coast line for part of the journey and the views are stunning. There are a couple of view points along the way where you can stop and check out the view.
Port Douglas is on a point, with the beach on one side and the harbour on the other. It has a lively market each Sunday which sees the whole town come out to shop and socialise. Home to lots of great cafes and modern restaurants, you can also go back to basics and enjoy a meal or a drink on the veranda at the Combined Club and watch the stunning sunsets.
Port Douglas is also a base for trips out to the Great Barrier Reef - with regular tours being run out to the Low Isles and beyond.
I would highly recommend it for a day trip....or longer. In fact, scrap staying in Cairns and head here instead!

Café in wonderful gardens
by ettiewyn about Cairns Botanical Gardens Café
At this café you can enjoy light lunches, cakes and ice cream in the beautiful surroundings of the Cairns Botanical Gardens (see Things To Do Tip). The staff is very nice and you can sit right within the intense green and enjoy the tranquility. The perfect location to have a rest and enjoy the tropical atmosphere.
The café is open from 7am til late. The Rainforest Boardwalk to the Centenary Lakes is also nearby (see Things To Do Tip). It is so nice on a hot tropical day to enjoy an ice cream in the shade!
Man made Lagoon
by amazingclick
carins has one of the most beautiful man made lagoons. It has no beaches so, the man made lagoon almost acts like a big beach as well as a pool. Take your trunks and have a good swim. There are facilities for showers as well as lockers here.
