Hello--most of the Bruce Highway is open now.Mission Beach should now be drivable if you have access to a car.I believe they are still assessing damage done to the railway lines into Tully--even if you travelled by train you need to get a coach or drive yourself to Mission Beach. There is a lot of cyclone damage down that way.Hope this helps and good luck with starting your woofin job.It is approx a 2 hour drive from Cairns but may take longer because of the work being done around Innisfail and areas.

Cheers

I don't want to be a wet blanket but have you checked that yur job is still available. Mission Beach was very badly damaged.

Have you tried car pooling? If you don't want to pay for a rental car you might also want to try getting a relocation car. They are those rental cars that are really cheap to rent.

Rental cars wont be allowed in that area yet.Only special coaches from Tully with workers and volunteers are transported in--so if you do have a secure job then you will be allowed--just remember they have no accommodation for people yet,Mission Beach has a loop road off the Bruce Highway.

Good luck.

Travel Tips for Cairns

Beach Paradise!

by Bwana_Brown

Visit the beaches -miles of them! We also enjoyed driving around the Cairns area, past sugar cane plantations and up into the hills surrounding the town. It was fun to explore Australia on our own and just to observe the different way of life! Photo of a beach near Cairns.

Port Douglas

by sue_stone

Located just one hours drive north of Cairns is my favourite town in the area, Port Douglas. Smaller than Cairns, Port Douglas has a real community feel about it. Yes, it has 5 star resorts, but doesn't has that tourist vibe like Cairns has (well, in my opinion anyway!).

The drive up to Port Douglas is stunning - the narrow highway hugs the coast line for part of the journey and the views are stunning. There are a couple of view points along the way where you can stop and check out the view.

Port Douglas is on a point, with the beach on one side and the harbour on the other. It has a lively market each Sunday which sees the whole town come out to shop and socialise. Home to lots of great cafes and modern restaurants, you can also go back to basics and enjoy a meal or a drink on the veranda at the Combined Club and watch the stunning sunsets.

Port Douglas is also a base for trips out to the Great Barrier Reef - with regular tours being run out to the Low Isles and beyond.

I would highly recommend it for a day trip....or longer. In fact, scrap staying in Cairns and head here instead!

getting around

by HeidiR

bicycle is good for a day to get quickly round cairns

Bus is good when you are by yourself, it takes about an hr to get to the Northern beaches $9 day beach pass on the bus

Otherwisehire a car if there are a few of you to get around

Café in wonderful gardens

by ettiewyn about Cairns Botanical Gardens Café

At this café you can enjoy light lunches, cakes and ice cream in the beautiful surroundings of the Cairns Botanical Gardens (see Things To Do Tip). The staff is very nice and you can sit right within the intense green and enjoy the tranquility. The perfect location to have a rest and enjoy the tropical atmosphere.

The café is open from 7am til late. The Rainforest Boardwalk to the Centenary Lakes is also nearby (see Things To Do Tip). It is so nice on a hot tropical day to enjoy an ice cream in the shade!

Man made Lagoon

by amazingclick

carins has one of the most beautiful man made lagoons. It has no beaches so, the man made lagoon almost acts like a big beach as well as a pool. Take your trunks and have a good swim. There are facilities for showers as well as lockers here.
